Flight Journal is a bi-monthly magazine that covers aviation-related topics. A good portion of the topics they cover is historic. You can either pitch new ideas that you think they will be interested in or create pitches based on the ideas listed on their contributor’s page listed above under guidelines.
If you want to pitch your own unique ideas, they publish articles that are based on history or historic aviation-related events, humor, personal experiences, photo features, interviews, technical and new product articles.
If you would prefer to make a pitch based on some of the stories they are currently looking for, here are a few examples:
- Tools, gadgets, and accessory reviews — what is your favorite and why?
- Aviation-based book reviews.
- Vintage aircraft restorations — interviews with the team and close-up photos of the work.
If interested, you should email them a single-page outline of your idea along with 1 or more related samples, if applicable. Most of their articles are 2500–3000 words; however, if the piece you are pitching will be longer, please discuss this with the editor before moving forward.

Adbusters is a bi-monthly Canadian magazine that is not-for-profit and reader-supported. This is an activist publication concerned with the erosion of the environment we live in due to commercialism. They have been around since 1989 and have been behind major activist events such as Occupy Wall Street, Buy Nothing Day, and Digital Detox Week.
They are looking for nonfiction essays and articles about global issues and how they affect your life personally. Ideas that can be covered are history, people, current events, or ideas for systematic change. They want essays, opinion pieces, interviews, or exposes.
If you can also express yourself through artwork or comic strips, the art director would be interested in seeing that as well. When pitching, you can also inquire if they are currently looking for any poetry or fiction and what themes they are interested in.

The Sun is 90% freelance written, and they publish poetry, fiction, essays, and interviews. They are open to all kinds of writing, but they favor personal writing.
Nonfiction: No minimum word count; maximum is 7,000 words. Payment ranges from $300–2000 plus a one-year subscription to their magazine. Looking for essays, personal experiences, memoirs, and interviews. Essays should be on cultural, political, or philosophical topics.
Reprints: Submit a photocopy of the printed article and original publication info. Payment is half of what non-published work receives.
Fiction: Short stories, maximum word count 7,000. Does not want genre fiction. Payment is $300–2000 plus a one-year subscription.
Poetry: Wants free verse, rarely published rhyming poetry. Submit 6 poems at a time. Will consider previously published poems but highly prefers unpublished poetry. Pays $100–250 plus a one-year subscription.
