`3 Productivity Lessons I Discovered Whilst Drunk On a Train

Lesson #1: A Deadline Helps
I was booked on the last train. Technically, it wasn’t the actual last train but the real last train would have me arrive home at 4am. The train I’m on (all being well) will get me home and in my bed at 11pm, and, as far as I’m concerned, this is today’s last train.
The 4am one is tomorrow’s first train.
Getting home at 4am is NOT an option.
My wife would NOT be happy and I would not be prepared for the day to come.
Luckily, I’m planning on getting home on time.
8.45pm was the time the best last train left.
Spoiler alert: I made it!
As I type we’re somewhere between York and London, and that’s good enough for me!
The 8.45pm deadline for this train departure was key. Without this last train I’d be toast! I’d be stranded in a city, without a place to sleep.
Luckily for me, I’m on the train!
Lesson #2: Alcohol Doesn’t Help
I’m 48 minutes into this journey and I have very few words to show for it.
This is 100% because I’ve had a few too many beers to drink.
Looking at my keyboard is hard. Ok, I’ve never been a ‘touch typist’ but right now, focussing on typing the right letters is difficult. Honestly, it’s REALLLY difficult.
Drunkeness + train wobblyness = major difficulty.
Whilst drunkeness doesn’t help productivity, in general, perhaps it does help the big picture…
Lesson #3: The Journey Is Key
As we speak I’m travelling at over 100km per hour.
And, according to most people’s definition, at this precise moment, they’d consider me drunk.
(At this stage I’ve spent a great deal of time attempting to ensure my previous words are correct. There may be typos. If there are I can only apologise.)
In the end, it’s only the journey that matters.
As I type, this train journey is the key for me, but I’m very aware it’s the bigger journey that truly matters.
Making the last train is incredibly important but you must always ensure you remember the bigger picture.
What long term train are you on?
Where are you going?
Are you going in the right direction?
How fast are you going?
I’m exactltly as I was when I started typing this story; drunk on a train, but I hope this article provides some value and helps you in your productivity journey.
