I have been writing a lot lately and there are some things I have implemented that make my writing better without much effort. I want to share them with you.

  1. Grammarly

Grammarly is a tool that checks your spelling, syntax and grammar usage as you write on your computer, tablet or smartphone. It is an app, a browser extension, and an application add-in. Once you install it and are logged in, it will automatically check your writing as you write it. It also gives you an emoji indicator of the tone of your text. This is great for business email when you may want to check how you are coming across to your colleagues. Plus, Grammarly is free.

2. Read your text aloud.

When you read aloud you can hear the way your words work together and whether it flows the way you want it to. If you are a parent and you read to your kids you may know what I’m talking about and how you can really try out the inflection you are going for.

3. Read more and varied sources

I have read a lot of books, articles, manuals, and other types of material throughout my life. Everything I read increases my vocabulary and my ability to understand the next thing I read. Classic literature has a different cadence than fantasy or Scifi or a modern thriller. But each type of writing lends a new perspective on how language is put together. By experiencing the differences your ability to use words together and become a better writer will grow.

These are just a few ways you can enhance your writing skills. I look forward to reading your next thing.
