3 Powerful Ways to Help Medium Writers Earn More Money
Please read this article all the way to the end and apply these 3 tips to every post you read on Medium.
When I first joined this platform as a Friend of Medium in late December 2023, I didn’t quite understand all of the ins-and-outs of the process for writers to get paid. Thankfully there is a ton of valuable content from experienced Medium contributors who share the tricks of the trade on how we can earn as much money as possible from our content.
If I hadn’t kept up with these folds and done some diligent reading, I may not have known or understood a few of the most important, basic means to support my fellow writers and help them earn more revenue.
Here I’ll share three very simple ways that you can contribute to the Medium community and support other writers, poets and authors.
These steps take literally no extra time than you’re probably already spending enjoying the content that is shared here while genuinely trying to keep members’ financial momentum going and increasing the revenue they earn from their hard work.
1. Read for 30 Seconds — It Makes All the Difference
Surprisingly, there is a large fraction of members on Medium that don’t know that in order for a contributor to earn from their published work that the unique reader must spend at least 30 seconds on the page of the post.
The earnings clock dosen’t start until the page is open continuously for at least 30 seconds.
This is important to know because if you have an interest in helping out other Medium writers and praising the time and effort they put into composing their work, that 30 seconds makes all the difference.
I can honestly say that I genuinely enjoy reading nearly 100% of what I read here and I generally don’t open a story unless the headline catches me.
Therefore, I take my time reading the posts all the way through and often look over the photos and read the comments, all while leaving the page open on my browser.
Sometimes I’ll open a few posts at a time in different tabs, hoping to start the clock on all of the stories. I’m not quite sure if this works but I figured it’s worth a try.
2. Hold Down the Clap Button
Social proof is a thing and psychologically we tend to gravitate toward content that others approve of, and the masses are very influential.
I personally respect the opinions of my fellow Medium contributors, artists and creators and I tend to see posts with a lot of positive feedback worthy of reading.
By no means does that suggest that content that hasn’t gotten exposure or gained traction isn’t worth the time to enjoy the contribution. In fact, there’s a lot of hidden gems in here and I’m always more than happy to offer my support.
As we all probably understand, leaving a sincere comment not only encourages and motivates writers and creators here, but it adds a bit of social proof and may give the post a bit of an advantage in the algorithm.
But the sometimes overlooked clap is just as valuable.
Check this out:
You can hold the clap button down, without releasing it and your claps will rapidly accumulate until they reach the maximum number of 50.
The first few days here I was repetively clicking trying to get the clap number as high as I could. My discovery of simply holding down the clap button to rack up the claps was a game changer for me.
Let’s call it the clap and hold method.
3. Use the Audio Read Feature
Another feature I’ve used a few times in recent days is the audio reading feature.
If you click the play button (circle with a right facing arrow) at the top of the story, a voice will read the entire post.
I’m assuming the default voice is female as that’s what I’ve gotten when I play the audio version.
This allows me to enjoy the content of the post while doing a few other things simultaneously and keeping the page open for the entire read, which can generally take 2–5 minutes.
That’s more than enough time to run up the earnings clock for the posts author.
Give these simple tips some thought and hey, why not practice right now!
1. Keep this page open for at least 30 seconds
2. Hold down the clap button until it reaches fifty
3. Allow the lovely voice to read this article to you
I always appreciate your support and I hope that this sheds some light on some of the most important aspects of supporting writers and contributors here on Medium. Thanks for reading!
