3 Oils I Use to Regrow My Hair
My Experience Using Oils to Regrow My Hair
I’ve been on a journey to try to regrow my hair for the last three years since I had my son.
I can't pinpoint what caused the spike in the hair loss since so many triggers were happening at the same time.
We just moved back to Finland from Australia and it was the toughest decision I've ever made in my life.
I was 6 months pregnant with my son at the time and self-care was the last thing on my mind.
By the time he was 6 months, I had gained over 30 kg from PTSD and I started keto along with intermittent fasting losing a massive 45kg within nine months.
Even though I was on vitamins and biotin, I was still losing my hair in massive amounts every day.
I had tried everything from commercial hair masks promising to regrow hair, shampoos and weekly sessions with the derma roller, nothing seemed to work, until I came across essential oils.
A Few Words Before We Dive In
Before we get started, I just want to point out important points to keep in mind for your safety.
- Keep in mind that these oils are extremely potent and should be used with extreme caution.
- Keep away from children and sensitive areas such as the mouth, nose, and eyes.
- Correctly dilute using another carrier oil such as olive oil or sweet almond oil before applying.
- The information in this article is merely my own experience and what has worked for me. It is not intended to diagnose or treat any ailment and should not be used as a substitute for medical advice.
Rosemary Oil
Known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, rosemary oil is amazing for the hair. It has been traditionally used to combat hair problems such as brittle hair, dandruff, and hair loss. The most important factor is to dilute it correctly and apply to the scalp at night and wash it in the morning.
Honestly, I did this 2 x a week and started to see results in as little as 3 months; less hair fall.
According to Healthline:
Another study of rosemary leaf extract (different from the essential oil) showed it stimulated hair growth. This occurred when hair loss was triggered by testosterone (as in pattern baldness). This study was performed on mice, however.
Two separate clinical reviews — one from 2010 and one from 2011 — also acknowledge rosemary’s hair growth potential. The former cites a study with successful hair regrowth in people with alopecia who used essential oils. One of these essential oils was rosemary.
Other oils that helped me greatly in regrowing my hair include :
- Peppermint oil: works in similar ways to rosemary oil but is less strong. Peppermint is also known for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties.
- Clove Oil: A stimulating oil containing the concentrated benefits of cloves. This one is my least favorite due to the strong aroma, yet I did notice a reduction in both dandruff and hair loss during the time that I used it.
- Black Castor Oil: A super thick oil that has been traditionally used in South East Asia and the middle east to nourish the hair and assist in promoting hair growth. This is a toxic oil when ingested internally, but the external application works well, just remember to use a carrier oil to dilute it as it can be too thick by itself.
Remember to use a carrier oil to help dilute the oils. My favorite carrier oils are jojoba oil and sweet almond oil as both are light and easy to wash off the hair.
