3 Lessons You Can Learn From Robbert Pattinson’s Career
It is all about proving your point

So I went to the theater yesterday and watched Tenet. It blew my mind. You should go watch it, and if you didn’t like the movie, then no worries, this is not the point of the article. It is about change and growth.
Robbert Pattinson’s performance in this movie amazed me. I knew the actor, but it was like I was rediscovering him. He is not the same bad boy from Twilight all girls were mad about.
A quick but deep evolution
His career evolution is impressive. He started as a lover in teenage movies and love stories (Water for the Elephants, 2011). He made some advertising for big brands — Dior and so on. He kept acting but in smaller roles, or maybe smaller movies (Good Time, High Life, and The Lighthouse), and came back to his full potential, acting in different types of movies, but always with a strong personality (The Devil All the Time, 2020).
I don’t know why seeing him this way struck me that much, but I felt inspired, and I think we all should learn a move or two from what he has done — even if we are not movie stars!
Aiming for big, but reachable
When we start our career, we might be a little lost. There are so many attractive jobs, but almost all of them seem out of reach. And it is really easy to get lost, confused, but also rejected.
When I started to look for jobs and internships, I had big expectations. I wanted something I will like for sure, but also a job that paid well and gave me recognition. But aiming for the perfect job was hard. I never got my number one choice. But I think that whatever your goal is, it is reachable, but maybe not tomorrow.
Start where the demand is
When searching for our first jobs, we get rejected by the best ones because we have not experimented enough. But don’t worry, you will always find something.
On the market, there are always high demands jobs, that require maybe harder work but that are not too regarding your resume. If you are good at what you are doing, and that they need someone for the job, they will take you.
Robbert Pattinson started of course as an actor in a movie that had a huge success, but let’s be honest, it was not the best performance he ever made. He was an acceptable actor, he had a pretty, translucid white face, and he got in for Twilight. He met the demand.
At your scale, start where people need you and where you are good at.
Don’t be afraid to try different things
Nowadays, we don’t keep our jobs for 20 years anymore. We move, companies want us to move, the world moves.
If you are lost, and even if you are not, it is great to try out different things. This way you will know what you like, but also what you don’t like. You might even discover a new hobby.
There are so many ways to make money, to be successful — like being an influencer on Instagram. But if it is not for you, if you don’t feel comfortable, then it won’t last.
Start with internships, or short term jobs, until you know what you want to do.

Climb your way to the top by being yourself
It is really hard to find our own path when the whole society tells us to behave a certain way. I was pushed by my parent to do a certain school, aim for a certain job, and then when I was in this school I wanted the elite jobs the teachers wanted for me.
“But I don’t see why I would turn to blockbusters. Often we don’t really know the directors of these films. I find that mainstream movies are quite boring as if I had seen them all before. “ — Robert Pattinson
R.P. did plenty of niche movies, that had a particular meaning to him, and that had some sense. He likes working alongside producers, getting to know them, and trusting their art.
The thing is, if you do something because someone else wants you to do it, not because YOU want to do it, you will never be satisfied. Success might hit your door. You might make good money. But you will never be truly happy.
If you don’t like it, skip it
Some jobs are attractive because they make good money. I could have gone into consulting, gain 5 times as much as I do today, and be higher ranked. But here I am, being a web developer, and I am much happier.
When I saw Robert Pattinson in his role in Tenet, I felt he was complete. Fully himself, acting in the moving but not acting in his life. He has always been a great actor, in any kind of movie, but in this movie, he felt perfectly in his place.
When you do something you like, aside from being good at it, you shine doing it. And your work will be even better. You will have that sparkle that will make you climb the scale to success. (Not that Robbert Pattinson needs any more success than he already has …).
Stand up for yourself
Even if I told you not to be too regardant — at first — on money and the job, it should not always be like this. Once you have made more than baby steps, that you have gained some experience, then you should make yourself respected.
People want you more than you want them
Once you have proven your point, with some experience behind you, if you are doing great, if you like what you are doing, then companies will want to recruit you. Either they come looking for you, or they welcome you with open arms, they will want you to work for them.
“The problem which I was finding was, however much I loved the movies I was doing, no one sees them. And so, it’s kind of this frightening thing, ’cause I don’t know how viable this is for a career.… I don’t know how many people there actually are in the industry who are willing to back you without any commercial viability whatsoever.” — Robert Pattinson
After R.P. realized he was not at his full potential, it let it know. He explicitly told his intentions of staring for big studios again. He was already trusted and soon was hired by Christopher Nolan to cast in Tenet. Right after that, he was contacted to be The Batman of Matt Reeves. He made it happen.
Don’t stay stuck in a position that doesn’t pay you enough, or where the team spirit is not great, or anything else, say it. Tell your company how you feel. Ask for a better salary. For more decent equipment. If you are good, they will know what you are worth, and they will do anything to keep you.
If you are attracted by another job, or not satisfied anymore, don’t let anything hold you back. If you feel that you are not making the best of yourself, not considered enough for your value, then move on. Don’t be afraid to leave your job because the boss is an old friend of your mom.

The three pillars — in conclusion
Maybe I have derived a little from Robert Pattinson’s life and career. Or maybe not. He made me reflect a lot on myself and my choices. He made me realize that a good career and a good life come from a balance. And this balance helps us find a job that suits us the most.
A job needs three things to be satisfying. Anyone can decide to put more emphasis on one of these sides. When you choose a job, ask yourself these questions :
- Am I good at it?
- Do I like it?
- Does it make good money?
According to your own needs, find an answer to these questions. It might not be a perfect 1/3 1/3 1/3 balance, but it needs to be a good balance for you.
Personally, I know that I might be good at some things, but I also know that I can’t stand doing something I don’t like, so I will value the “like” part more than the “good” part. Moreover, I want to be comfortable in my life and I don’t want to have to restrain myself, so I will give the “money” part a great share too.
