3 Interesting Human Behaviors That Are Inspired By Frogs

I have recently found out that a lot of people are referring to stories about frogs. I know there are persons who collect objects in the shape of frogs, because they are a lucky symbol of creativity, abundance, and harmony. Frogs are also the subjects of fables and proverbs in many cultures.

I am surprised: I am not an expert, but I think a frog is not a very common animal. Why are frogs so important, why is everybody referring to their behavior?

The following three stories give us some hints.

The first one is related to Mark Twain quote: “If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

The message is: after you eat the frog, which corresponds to the most complicated or difficult task, the worst part of the day is behind you, and the rest of your day will be easier. This is a message we could all take: it helps organize our time and bring our projects forward. It’s a practice I tend to follow, and when I can make it, I am very proud of myself.

To be honest, the idea of eating a big frog is not pleasant, and it really gives me the feeling of something that I don’t like.

The second tale about frogs is known as the ‘boiling frog syndrome’. It is based on a legend: if you put a frog in boiling water, it will jump out and save itself from death; while if you put a frog alive in cold water and slowly heat it, it will not perceive the danger and will be boiled alive.

This narrative is used as a metaphor for our inability to be aware or react to gradual threats, while we clearly recognize sudden dangers. It describes our failure to act against a difficult situation which will become more severe. The boiling frog story helps us avoid suffering, and it may be considered as a caution against normalcy. It is also used in business to reinforce the message that gradual change can be more easily accepted.

The only example I get about my life is when I need to see a dentist: I have little pain and I wait because I hate going there, then one day the pain is so heavy that I plead to the dentist for an appointment.

The third story is the most romantic: what happens if I kiss a frog? The frog will not become a prince, and maybe the taste won’t be that good. It seems that some frogs even have poisonous skin, so kissing could be dangerous. Don’t do it! Yet, how many frogs do you have to kiss before you kiss your Prince?

But that’s another story.
