3 Healthy and Maybe Even Altruistic Reasons I Prefer to Wear Makeup “Every Day”
You don’t? We can still be friends
Going through life with makeup on is a smart choice for a woman.
I don’t wear a lot — just foundation, lip pencil, gloss, and a little blush. It takes 5–10 minutes to prepare my face, put it on, and blend it.
So mine’s not a glamor look.
Makeup gives me a lift
Color cheers me up. In fact, certain colors cheer most people up. We like flowers in our yards and happy hues in our homes.

We ditched black and white TV because we enjoy life more in color. It can affect our moods and emotional health.
Makeup is one more way to add color to life — usually on the lips, cheeks, and for some, the eye area. I feel more cheerful instantly! I expect things to go well, and for the most part, that’s what happens.
If cosmetics enhance optimism, they may be worth the time and money.
Makeup gives other people a lift
I’ve definitely been influenced by a woman who wore makeup on some days, but not on others. What a difference it made when she did. Not just with me, but with everyone she worked with.
You always knew when it was going to be a good day. I don’t know if it was causal or coincidental.
Another woman I know can change everyone’s day for the better just by walking into the room. Her makeup would be too bright for me, but it isn’t what I notice first. It’s her light, her joy, her smile.
A note about a family dog
A certain family dog didn’t wear makeup, but she was groomed regularly. Nails were cut. Fur was washed, dried, and trimmed. A ribbon was clipped to her fur.
She may not have known she looked different after grooming, but she knew she got more attention. She radiated delight and behaved better.
Mmm.
That said, grooming the dog probably gave the family more pleasure than it gave the dog.
Makeup gives the economy a lift
I’m not even talking about the high-end brands.
I’m talking about the independent representatives and beauty consultants — usually women — who work with Avon, Mary Kay, and similar companies. Students and students’ wives. Young married, stay-at-home, and divorced moms. Retirees and others.
Some may not have many ways to generate income. In any case, they enjoy selling cosmetics.
I’m not buying mine from them at the moment, but I did— for years. I probably will again because I admire them as business people and appreciate how they treat customers. They fill an important need.
They represent billions of dollars in revenue. Just check their websites. That means more financial stability for women.
I may change my mind about wearing makeup
It wouldn’t be the first time.
I once wore less than I do now. When I started wearing more, I thought people responded to me better.
I’ve also worn more than now. I decided to simplify and save money and time.
The words “Every Day” in my title are in quotes. I don’t wear makeup every single day without exception. I wear it most days, but it’s nice to have a day off.
I understand women on other sides of the issue because I’ve been one of them. My choice is not necessarily the only smart choice.
Key message: Wearing makeup can give a woman, other people, and the economy a lift.
