3 First Steps to a Non-Toxic Life

These are easy and affordable things you can do today!

Until a few short years ago, just the thought of living a non-toxic life was overwhelming to me. I had no idea where to start. I was hearing everywhere on social media that pretty much everything we use and wear is toxic.

It kind of freaked me out!

I was determined to do something about it. But where to start? I decided to start with the foods we ate. I learned all about the toxic chemicals that are in and on different foods, like our fruits and vegetables. I started there!

Buy Organic Food Whenever Possible

When it comes to the foods we eat, it is essential that we fuel our bodies with the cleanest foods possible. The toxic chemicals that are sprayed on our fruits and vegetables, for example, build up in the body and can cause many serious health conditions like autoimmune diseases and cancer, just to name a few.

There are two lists that can help you when choosing which foods you should buy organic and which foods you can get away with buying non-organic. The latter being less likely to contain these harmful chemicals. These two lists are the “Dirty Dozen” and the “Clean 15.” See my article below that goes into great detail about these two lists.

The other food I wanted to mention is meat. Often we don’t think about what goes into the meat we eat. We don’t think about what that animal ate, what it was injected with, its living conditions, etc. What that animal ate is what you are also putting into your body by eating the meat of that animal.

The chicken, for example, was fed grains, pumped with hormones and was forced to live in dirty cages all its life. That is not going to make for healthy chicken for you to consume. The same goes for meat like beef.

The next time you seek out options for buying meat, please look for organic, pasture-raised chicken and organic grass-fed beef. You follow this first step and you are already well on your way to a healthier life.

Your body will thank you!

Throw out those DRYER SHEETS

Yes, those things you throw in your dryer to keep the static out of your clothes. They are one of the most toxic items we use. They leave harmful chemicals on your clothes, bedsheets, towels, etc that then come in contact with your body. They seep into your skin and are absorbed in your body.

The skin absorbs things, like toxic chemicals, into your bloodstream. The skin is the biggest organ in the body.

A great alternative to dryer sheets is wool balls. They are very affordable and sold at stores like Walmart and even on Amazon. You can use them by themselves or add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to them for that fresh smelling laundry.

This will get you started in removing many harmful chemicals from touching and absorbing into your skin each day.

Start slowly! One item at a time…

Don’t overwhelm yourself by thinking you need to clean house and get rid of every product you use and food you eat and start fresh. That is not only unrealistic but also very costly. Start with one item at a time, one area at a time.

For example, start in your kitchen. Remove all your fruits that are on the dirty dozen list and buy them organic. Continue from there with your next grocery shopping trip.

Boom! There is your first step complete.

Next, you can look in your laundry room. Throw out those dryer sheets. Then next time look into the laundry detergent you are using and swap it out for a cleaner brand.

Baby steps can turn something that seems very overwhelming and unattainable to something that is very doable. Over time you will find yourself using a lot less toxic products and consuming cleaner, healthier foods.

To Recap:

Check out my article “What to Buy… Organic vs Non Organic Foods” and buy foods on the dirty dozen list as organic whenever possible. Consume organic and pasture raised/grass fed meat. Throw out those dryer sheets and give yourself some grace. Start slowly, replace one or two items or foods at a time and you will find yourself well on your way to a more non toxic life.
