3 Business Lessons I Learnt from My Father’s Mistakes

No mistakes. No business.

In 2008, my father started his business at home when I was 6.

Growing up, I saw my father evolving as a person and businessman.

I saw his successes and failures so closely that I tied life and business lessons with me.

It happens as I usually discuss regarding business with my father, learn and observe from him:

1) Don’t help anybody at the cost of your loss.

Being kind is good until people aren’t using you.

That’s why I experienced there’s no harm in saying NO if they come to only get advantage from you.

Why say YES if it disturbs your peace of mind and work?

My father once said,

“I’m left behind because of offering beyond a limit to others.”

I felt this.

That hit me as a reminder to have boundaries and never be afraid of prioritizing myself.

How easily do we call selfish prioritizing ourselves?

And there’s nothing wrong with it.

2) Starting independently is better than partnerships

Yes, partnerships lead to success with strategic networking and collaboration.

But here, I’m discussing the idea of starting a business with partners who have jointly invested in it from the beginning.

My father started a business from the ground level with partners twice, but both times it failed. It resulted in dividing the invested capital and initiating from the beginning each time.

Now, my father is operating his business as an individual owner with more profits and a more extensive customer base.

In some businesses, operating individually works, and partnerships work in other industries.

So, be aware of your strengths and know your market before partnering with somebody from the foundation.

3) Emotions have no place in businesses.

Being emotional means dragging yourself back.

“What will others think about me?”

“Should I say yes to not disappoint them?”

Such sentences don’t make sense when the business is about exchanging — giving and taking.

Otherwise, busyness takes a toll on you.

Being emotional and taking things personally means taking biased decisions, stress, and overthinking.

And I have dealt with this all. Keeping a business limited to exchange and not stretching it to impact your life is a trait you learn over time while grinding.

Final Thoughts

I have analyzed two ways for growth so far:

1) Learn from your mistakes.

2) Learn from others’ journeys and mistakes.

A Mixture of both acts as a weapon to surpass unfavourable situations.

So, I learn from the clues of other successes and document my mistakes to learn from my experiences.

Summarizing, thrive in business by

  • Keeping a boundary not to let others use you.
  • Being thoughtful if you can do it individually or with partnerships.
  • Keeping aside the emotions in a business.
