Alternate nostril-breathing:
Traditional yogic texts say that covering one nostril at a time to breathe through the other invokes specific energy and emotion. The left nostril calms while the right energizes.
Slow exhales:
This neuroscientist reveals that our heart rate slows as we exhale and increases as we inhale. Exhaling slowly reduces stress and anxiety.
The psychological sigh:
Just before bed you may have experienced breathing two short inhales followed by one long exhale. This biological function offloads carbon dioxide, helping us move into a restful rate.
