The Best Metaverse Investments Right Now

How to profit from the metaverse

Congrats — you lived long enough to witness Ready Player One become a reality.

Did I say congrats? I meant, oh God.

The Metaverse, a concept originally from Neal Stephensen’s cyberpunk classic “Snow Crash’’, may become the biggest disruptor that society has ever faced.

Although we are very early into this space, people are already working 9 to 5 jobs in the metaverse, buying virtual land, dating, going to concerts, fucking, and even considering sending their kids to school.

Grayscale Investments extrapolates that the metaverse is a trillion-dollar opportunity. That’s one trillion dollars in revenue per year.

Somewhere, George Orwell rolled over in his grave.

My question is: How do I profit from all this? So I asked Twitter, and I got some amazing responses. Here’s what I gathered…

Decentraland (MANA)

Decentraland is the hottest investment right now in the metaverse.

In a nutshell, Decentraland is a video game released in 2020 that combines elements from Sims, Minecraft, and Second Life and pairs them together with blockchain tech.

The big idea with Decentraland is that the virtual land inside the game is fixed at 45,000 private parcels. Once it’s all bought up no more will be made. Some of this virtual land is already owned by major crypto companies like Binance and Kraken who have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in this space.

Artists like Deadmau5 and Paris Hilton have performed in Decentraland, along with hundreds of others.

Investors are speculating that the virtual land they own will one day be a place that people visit by the millions. It’s almost like investing in Central Park before it was built.

If you take anything away from Decentraland let it be this: If Facebook buys this thing it’s going to make a lot of people filthy rich.

It’s a lot easier to buy something that works, than build from scratch.

Facebook (META)

Oculus, the widely popular VR company, being sold off to Facebook was one of the worst things that could have happened to technology this decade.

Metaverse in the hands of Facebook is not a good thing.

Facebook is just trying to hype itself into the metaverse space. As with social media, they ruin everything they touch. But you know something? It’ll still work out for them in the end; it always does.

Source

Here’s the thing that most crypto cultists don’t want to hear: Most people don’t care about decentralization. They care about the best and most popular products.

Zuckerburg and company don’t have anything, besides marketing, to show for Meta right now; but, eventually, they’ll make their move. It’s inevitable.

Venture Capitalists completely missed out on Bitcoin because it didn’t come through Silicon Valley. Now tech companies are spending a shit-ton on marketing to shill, what are essentially, centralized concepts but on the blockchain!

Regardless, Facebook will be a safe investment in the end.

Theta and Tfuel

As one guy explained to me on Twitter

If you want to invest in the “Nuclear Power Plant” and the “Enriched Uranium 235” of the metaverse buy Theta and Tfuel.

Theta is going to innovate the entire infrastructure that powers our technology.

It will decentralize the central servers that direct and store data. By doing this, most online services like Netflix, Disney+, Google, and almost any video game that needs an online connection will speed up significantly.

Moreover, it’ll greatly reduce the possibility of hacks on said systems.

Theta is a dual-token platform as it utilizes two different tokens: the Theta token (THETA) and the Theta Fuel token (TFUEL). THETA is the main governance asset of the platform, while TFUEL is the reward token used to incentivize content creators and providers of network resources.

Theta is massively undervalued and could play a huge role in the metaverse.

The Sandbox

Source

The Sandbox is a lot like Decentraland but with a heavy Minecraft influence.

It’s a lot more fun than Decentraland and has more developers. They also have an odd, eclectic set of partnerships including:

  • Atari
  • The Walking Dead
  • Hell’s Kitchen
  • The Smurfs
  • The South China Morning Post

Billionaires like Bill Gates and Michael Burry (who predicted the 2008 housing crisis) are buying up real-world land in huge quantities.

It’s an interesting trend. Except, not all physical land, just like virtual land, has value. Right now you can buy remote abandoned land in New Mexico for $600. Maybe you’ll get a good view of some alien landings.

The point here is that figuring out what land is valuable in Sandbox and Decentraland is damn hard. It’s pure speculation.

Axie Infinity

There are many metaverses, but Axie Infinity is definitely one of the most popular.

Created by video game studio Sky Mavis, Axie Infinity is Pokémon meets Tamagotchi.

As in Pokémon, you have to breed, raise, and battle your creatures, otherwise known as Axies in a world called Lunacia. You can also buy land in Axie Infinity that can increase in value.

The highest plot of land sold in Axie Infinity sold for 550 ETH ($2.5 million dollars).

Axie Infinity is a fan favorite in economically challenged countries like Brazil, India, Mexico and the Phillippines.

On average, users collect between 4000 to 5000 of the in-game currency — known as ‘Smooth Love Potion’ and ‘AXS shards’ — a month. In July 2021 that would have netted you around $1500.

That’s a damn good side hustle if you ask me.

Final Thoughts

In my opinion, we are way too early to be making investments in the metaverse. If crypto is speculative investing then the metaverse is gambling. These investments are very risky.

Here are some things to mull over:

  • Most people aren’t interested in getting a VR headset. They’re still really expensive.
  • Metaverse games like Decentraland and Axie Infinity are boring. They can’t hold a candle to real video games.
  • Getting good computer parts to fully immerse yourself in these games is fucking impossible. Crypto mining is killing computer gaming.

As YouTube investor Andrei Jikh concluded in a recent video, the only guaranteed millionaires in the metaverse are the creators. We have no idea what the metaverse will look like 10 years from now.

I know. High risk, high reward. But how risky do you want to get?
