Do You Know Why You Really Like to Write?
I do it for three reasons and not the one you think!
As you ponder the question, “do you know why you really write”, please don’t bother with the obvious reason that’s typically at the top of the list.
It doesn’t matter whether we admit that we write for monetary gain right from the start, or whether the first thing we do is say: “I don’t write for the money.” Money is usually the first thing that comes up.
So money aside (no pun intended), what are other reasons you write?
I write for three very good reasons
I write for a lot of different reasons. I love writing more than practically anything else in my life.
But if I had to narrow it down, there are three main reasons why I’m motivated to write.
Those three reasons are:
- I write to heal
- I write to share
- I write to inform
Writing can help you heal
Writing has been an absolute source of healing for me, because once upon a time, I wrote to chase away the ghosts that haunted me from my past.
For me, healing came through writing.
That’s how it’s always been for me as a writer, and it all started with journal writing.
After many years, eventually, I became able to write about some of those same fears and negative feelings that I shared in my journal; only now I was allowing other people to read what I wrote.
This taught me the lesson that even when you don’t realize it, writing can help you heal, as long as you feel free to write the truth.
If you haven’t been able to experience this feeling yet, maybe you should purchase a journal and start expressing yourself really freely.
Writing is a great way to share
Writing stories and personal experiences is one of the best ways for us to share who we are, and what we’ve experienced.
When I write, I’m hoping that someone who reads my stories and experiences will have the common sense not to repeat my same mistakes.
- Do you feel this way about your own writing?
- Don’t you just love knowing that you may have potentially helped someone going through some kind of life crisis?
Personally, it makes me feel good, and even kind of proud, to know that I may have helped even one person, in some small way.
Writing to inform is my favorite reason
The only thing I love better than discovering good news about something, is sharing that news with others.
It’s awesome when the good news is something of value and can truly benefit your readers, or the ones receiving the information.
I guess that was how I got so hooked on writing to inform readers about topics such as writing on Medium — my number one Medium topic.
The advice and opinions I share are mostly based on my personal views and experiences, not just the Medium related stories, but also those about relationships, self improvement, productivity, and more.
Of course I don’t deny that there are other motivating reasons and incentives that cause me to keep writing, because there are. And I love being able to heal myself and share my stories.
But I think it’s super cool when you have something great to inform people about, and know that the information is of real value.
Final Thoughts
My love for writing has never been in question, even when I find myself getting fed up with the way things often go with online writing sites.
While I’m far from being happy with how my writing journey on Medium has managed to turn out, I’ll never lose the joy that comes from sitting down and creating something out of nothing, other than what’s in your mind.
So even when my relationships change with whatever writing vehicle I’m currently taking advantage of, my love of writing will always remain.
Now that I’ve spent a few minutes revealing to you my particular reasons for writing, you’ve had time to think about your own.
So ask yourself, do you know why YOU really write? Feel free to respond.
