Writers on Medium get paid to write stories about any and everything their little hearts desire. Self published authors on Twitter don’t earn a cent, while they spend their time promoting their book to other authors.

Are you a self published author who hasn’t bothered to check out all the benefits of joining Medium?

This story is written specifically for you. I know exactly who you are, because I used to be you.

What I’m about to suggest in my comments below; this happened to me, in the same way I lay it out.

If you pay attention and read all the way to the end, you’re about to see how you could be doing yourself a huge favor. Not only can you help promote and increase book sales, like you’re trying to do on Twitter, but you can also get paid in the process.

Why do self published authors use Twitter to promote their books?

It’s no secret that self published authors use Twitter to promote their books. Many of them have a newly released title, or they expect to complete a manuscript and self publish on Amazon soon.

This is especially the case from November to February, and maybe a little before and after those months. That’s because the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenge begins in November. As a result, by December 31st, there are thousands of new Amazon authors, as well as in the succeeding months.

That is when Twitter really comes alive with authors, all clamoring to get attention and eyes on their lovely new book covers and enticing book titles.

Twitter becomes like a virtual water hole, where they all gather, and why not? Twitter is undoubtedly a busy and high traffic social media site, with a gigantic audience.

There are thousands of writers of every level, buzzing around on Twitter. Some are freelance writers, who are open to trying different online writing opportunities, such as writing on Medium.

On the other hand, the authors or aspiring authors, usually only have one thing on their mind — publishing, promoting, and selling their books (well that’s 3 things, but you get what I mean).

This group of writers are the ones this story is for. So often, when you have the kind of tunnel vision that self published authors generally have, you can miss out on opportunities.

The funny thing is; you do it because you want to keep your eye on the ball (your book), but the opportunities you ignore can sometimes benefit your book.

This happened to me, time and time again when I first became a self published author. I thought that now that I was an author, all my writing energies had to be directly focused on the book. I didn’t think about my indirect focus.

Why do authors on Twitter often ignore writing on Medium?

There are lots of reasons why many authors on Twitter tend to ignore writing on Medium, but one of those answers is easy to sum up. Their book.

Speaking from experience, whenever I find myself in author mode, and working on a new book project, it dominates my life, not just my time.

In the past, during those periods, I found it hard to write anything else on a regular basis, unless it was marketing or promotion for the book. That was true before completing the book, during publication, and once the book was finally released.

The last thing on my mind was finding a website to write articles for, but fortunately for me, I still continued to read articles. That is how I eventually stumbled onto Medium. Perhaps the same thing happened to you, and that’s how you found your way to the Medium writing community.

For instance

  • Maybe you like to pop over to the Medium website from time to time, and read one or two of the interesting, informative, and thought provoking stories. If you saw a title and link tweeted in a post on Twitter, chances are, you visited Medium, read the article and left.
  • Maybe you stayed and read two more stories, but then Medium prevented you from reading anymore (unless you agreed to become a member), so you got turned off and left.
  • You probably even came back again, just as soon as you saw another great story you wanted to read, but you still didn’t bother trying to join the website, which means you’re limited on how many stories you can read.

Whether you had the same or similar experience, it doesn’t matter. Because now that you’re reading this story, you no longer have an excuse not to find out about the benefits you’re missing out on.

Why is now the time for self published authors to become members on Medium?

In my humble opinion, now is the time for self published authors to start migrating over to the Medium website, and become a member.

Here’s why:

  • The next few months are about to be a NaNoWriMo writing related frenzy! Writers everywhere tend to kick into gear on Twitter, sharing their plans to join the writing challenge, and to report their progress.
  • Many new authors will be coming on the scene as a result, and many new opportunities to promote book titles will be created. Twitter will be full of authors, determined to get the same exposure you’re vying for, and providers who offer to promote your book. But NONE of these groups are necessarily READERS.
  • Medium can be a fertile ground to sow seeds about your book, or even publish book excerpts without as much competition from other new and existing self published authors (and often aggressive marketers).
  • Medium allows you the opportunity to write about your book, your characters, or merely about your author’s writing journey.
  • You get to write stories and promote your book in whatever way you want to, in a less crowded and competitive community, and GET PAID to do it.
  • You can write and earn money, you can refer other writers to join and earn money, and you can create a following for your other online endeavors and ultimately earn more money.

You also get the benefit of making connections with other writers, and possibly helping them to become authors also, based on the experiences you provide.

Your $5 monthly membership fee (or $50 for the year) can unlock the door to a wealth of valuable stories, all about writing, publishing, inspiration, and becoming an even better author.

If writing related stories is not something you’re interested in reading, there are other diverse categories and tags you can read about, or write about.
