Are you looking for a good list of freelance writing markets to send pitches and manuscripts to? This article contains 26 websites and magazines that accept at least one of the following: nonfiction, fiction, poetry, or artwork. Some of them are looking for a variety of different pieces.
This article contains information on 26 websites and print magazines that you can send your completed manuscripts and article pitches. Finding great places to submit to can be challenging — let me find them for you!
Part of this article is a recap of previous articles I have written. However, most people will not read every article I have ever written. So this is perfect for those who may have missed those markets or just forgot about them.
Of course, if you have read all my articles, I included 11 additional markets I have never written about before. So there is something new for everyone!
Each of these freelance writing markets will contain the name of the magazine or website, either the main website or a guidelines link, an email if no guidelines link is available, what they are looking for, and the expected payment.
These markets are paying markets; more than half of these markets pay at least $100.00, and the majority have a range that goes above $100.00. Some of them give the possibility of making thousands. Good Luck!
Analog
Looking For: Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction
Payment: varies from less than $100.00 to up to $4,800.00
Analog is a science fiction and fact magazine. They accept short stories, serial stories, poetry, and articles. Here are the word counts and payment scale:
- Poetry — $1.00 per line
- Fact Articles — $0.09 per word (for example — a 1,000-word article would pay $90.00).
- Short Fiction — Up to 20,000 words — $0.08–0.10 a word (up to $2,000.00).
- Serial Fiction — 40,000–80,000 words — $0.06 a word (Up to $4,800.00).
Anxiety Foundation
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $50.00
The Anxiety Foundation accepts well-researched, informational content articles of at least 550 words. Keep in mind that this is a family-friendly website. They are looking for articles that include experience, knowledge, or tips about mental health.
Barefoot Writer
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $100.00–300.00
If you want to get paid to write about writing, you might be interested in The Barefoot Writer. They are looking for content for 6 different columns. The word count ranges from 400 — to 900. Check out the guidelines for more info on each column.
The Bitter Southerner
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $250.00–500.00
The Bitter Southerner publishes essays and in-depth feature articles that reflect the author’s perception of southern America. These articles are based on first-hand experience (visiting, growing up there, or currently living there). However, they are also open to perspectives from people who do not live in the south.
For features, they want stories 2,500–5,000 words in length. They will also consider shorter pieces (1,000–3,000 words). Those pieces would include profile pieces, personal essays, opinions, and reviews.
Bon Appetit
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $250.00 for a 400-word story; rates go up from there.
Bon Appetit is an online and print magazine all about food. They publish recipes, restaurant reviews, and food-related articles. They are looking for pitches on cooking, shopping, restaurants, culture & Lifestyle. Check out their online pitch guide as they tell you exactly what a pitch to them should look like, and they give examples.
Chesapeake Bay Magazine
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $100.00–1,000.00
Chesapeake Bay Magazine does not have an online guidelines page, so if interested, you can send your pitches to [email protected]. This magazine caters to boaters, which should be kept in mind when pitching.
They are looking for how-to, essays, book excerpts, new product, interview, nostalgia, humor, profile, technical, travel, and photo features. The Word count is 300–3,000.
Contently
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $350.00–1,000.00
Contently is a subscriber-based website that helps members and users to plan, manage and optimize their content. They offer membership tools and a blog with additional info on all topics relating to content marketing.
They are looking for articles on SEO, profiles, behind the scenes, case studies, creative advice, industry trends, interviews, and more. Payment is usually $500.00–1,000; however, shorter pieces of only 600 words are generally paid $350.00.
Cottage Life
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: unlisted but has been reported as a range from $75.00–4,000.00
Cottage Life is a magazine based in Ontario, Canada. They publish articles daily on their website and in 6 print magazines a year. They offer a variable kill fee between 50% to 100%.
They are looking for journalistic articles about cottage life, cottage country, political and financial articles related to this lifestyle, environmental topics, and personal experiences. They will also consider lighter stories that cover topics like DIY items for the cottage, the outdoors, and timely pieces. Word count starts at 400 words for small, front-of-the-book pieces and up to 3,000 words for features.
They only want pitches. Do not send completed manuscripts.
The Deadlands
Looking For: Nonfiction, Fiction, Art, and Poetry
Payment: $50.00–500.00
The Deadlands wants to see pieces about death and the world in between (including the paranormal).
For fiction, they want speculative fiction of 5,000 words or less. Payment is $0.10 a word. They will also consider reprints but only pay $0.01 a word for previously published work.
For nonfiction, they are looking for essays of 1,000–4,000 words about death in the media. Essays pay a flat fee of $100.00.
Poetry submissions are currently closed, but they expect them to reopen in May of 2022, and payment is $50.00 a poem.
They also license artwork. Payment is $100.00 for the non-exclusive right to publish on their cover.
Defector
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: Short pieces start at $500.00, and long pieces start at $1,000.00.
Defector is an employee-owned sports and culture magazine. It was created by former staff members of Deadspin. They publish articles about sports, entertainment, politics, and anything else that is interesting or newsworthy. Pitch your ideas on anything interesting you come across or on topics they already publish. They especially like stories that will grab the reader’s attention — think crazy news stories or weird things on the internet right now.
Eater
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: unlisted but has been reported as a range from $0.10 a word to $0.67 a word.
There are 6 different types of articles that they are looking for:
Reports — 1800 words or less. Some examples are the particulars of restaurant operations or world food curiosities.
- Longform — 3500–4000 words, extensive research and reporting is involved.
- Travel — Specifically looking for pieces that have local or native perspectives on the food and culture that is being covered.
- Voices — These are 1st personal pieces; they are opinion or personal experience related.
- Shopping — This section spotlights specific products or product roundups.
- Eater at Home — examples include essays attached to recipes, trends, and specific foods.
Fido Friendly Magazine
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $0.10–0.20 a word
Fido Friendly is accepting pitches for nonfiction articles of 600–1,200 words. They especially like general interest, essays, travel with dogs, how-to, humor, inspirations, personal experience, interview, and travel.
They also accept content for their column, Fido Friendly City, a column about cities where dogs have opportunities for entertainment such as shopping, dog-friendly restaurants, sports, and dog parks.
Finally, they also take adventure fiction about or featuring dogs. There is no online guidelines page, but you can email pitches to [email protected].
The Forge
Looking For: Fiction and Nonfiction
Payment: $75.00
The forge accepts fiction and nonfiction and pays $75.00 per piece, regardless of length. They prefer to receive pieces of less than 3,000 words and only one submission per month per author. Their only criteria for publishing work is literary excellence.
Freelance Mom
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $75.00–100.00
Freelance Mom is looking for articles between 900 to 1,500 words. These articles should offer tips and practical advice on the subjects they cover, such as marketing, productivity, personal development, money, business, social media, and work at home.
Although they publish many different types of articles, the most successful ones are highly personal articles, highly researched articles, and guides.
From Day One
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $200.00–300.00
From Day One describes itself as a forum on corporate values. Its mission is to find innovative ways for companies to create and maintain better relationships with their customers and employees.
They are looking for stories between 800–and 1,000 words about companies and how they could do better on a more personal level.
Frontier
Looking For: Poetry
Payment: $50.00–150.00
When checking the guidelines, scroll down. They list contests and calls at the top, but the always open, always free submission is near the bottom of the page. They pay new writers $50.00 per selected poem, up to $150.00.
Grain
Looking For: Nonfiction, Fiction, and Poetry
Payment: $50.00–250.00, plus two contributors copies
Although Grain takes work all year long, they have a monthly cap. If they are at the limit, I suggest you return at the beginning of the following month.
You can submit fiction and nonfiction up to 3,500 words. For poetry, you can submit up to 6 poems. Payment is $50.00 per published page, up to $250.00. They also give authors two contributors copies of the issue their work appeared in.
Life & Thyme
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $200.00–500.00
Life & Thyme does not have online guidelines, but I have linked above to their online pitch form. The website publishes in-depth features, videos, and recipes. They publish articles about the world’s problems and how these issues relate to food.
NutriInspector
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $60.00–180.00
NutriInspector is a diet, weight-loss, and nutrition guide. They are looking for articles from people who have a background in health, nutrition, or wellness. These are the types of articles they are looking for and the payment rate:
- Product Reviews (1,000 words) — $60.00
- Informational Articles (2,000–3,000 words) — $120.00
- How To Guides (3,000–4,000 words) — $120.00–180.00
Pregnant Chicken
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $100.00
Pregnant Chicken is a website that covers topics like parenthood and pregnancy. They are looking for engaging articles and content. Specifically, they want articles, advice, and tips. They are especially looking for funny or emotional articles. Payment is $100.00, and articles must be at least 300 words long.
Radish Magazine
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $50.00–150.00
Radish magazine is looking for magazines to improve their reader’s live through natural foods. They accept submissions for a variety of columns. Most of their material is written by their staff, but they do take a limited number of articles from freelancers.
Rank pay Blogger
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $50.00
Rank pay Blogger pays $50.00 for approved posts on their website. They are looking for writers to cover Digital marketing, SEO, and small business. These articles should be 1,000 or more words, unique and original, and utilize imagery, data, and expert quotes.
Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR)
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $600.00–1,500.00
The SSIR highlights issues that businesses, organizations, and government agencies face. They are especially interested in global issues and how these establishments are working on solving them.
They are looking for book reviews, case studies, viewpoints, field reports, features, and columns. They cover social entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, philanthropic strategies, environmental protection, educational reform, and poverty alleviation.
Sky and Telescope
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: Payment is negotiated, but usually at least $0.25 per word.
Sky and Telescope considers both columns and longer pieces. For longer pieces, they are looking for word counts of 1.000–2,400. They especially like historical pieces, how-to, photo features, and personal experiences. For columns, they want content for their column Focal Point, which is an opinion column that runs 550 words.
Wow — Women on Writing
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $50.00–150.00
Wow — Women on Writing does buy nonfiction articles from 1,000–to 3,000 words. They typically pay $50.00–75.00 but may pay as high as $150.00 on articles with higher word counts and topics that require multiple sources.
Zift
Looking For: Nonfiction
Payment: $100.00
Zift is a parenting app designed to allow parents to monitor and control screen time. About half of the blogs on this website are about technology and parenting. The rest of the blogs are general parenting articles.
They want articles with original content offering practical advice, which includes references. Your article must be at least 800 words, but they prefer articles of 1,500–2,000 words.
