Summary

The article emphasizes the importance of quality followers over quantity, advocating for organic growth through leadership, valuable content, and meaningful interactions rather than the "follow for follow" approach.

Abstract

The author, Deon Christie, argues that having 250 active followers who genuinely engage with content is more valuable than having a large number of dormant followers. The piece outlines strategies for gaining quality followers without resorting to the "follow for follow" tactic, including leading by example, providing solutions to problems, and engaging with an audience through quality content and comments. Christie stresses the significance of failing and learning as a prerequisite to leading and suggests that a responsive audience is built by offering valuable insights and interacting with readers on platforms like Medium. The article also touches on the author's personal experience with rebuilding a Medium profile and the consistent growth achieved through these principles.

Opinions

  • Leadership in content creation involves failing, learning, and outperforming competitors to offer followers compelling reasons to engage.
  • Quality content should address common needs, provide solutions to problems, answer questions, guide towards goals, or offer free resources.
  • Engaging with an audience through comments and interactions can lead to a more responsive and targeted follower base.
  • Building a responsive audience is more about the quality of content and audience interaction than about the number of followers.

People Will Follow You If You Lead.

Audiences and readers will follow you if you lead, but before you can lead you first have to fail! Because failure is how you gather the knowledge to be able to lead.

If you want to lead someone, then you have to know the path by first walking it. Walking, falling, and getting up as many times as needed until you can lead.

Leading is no easy task, it means you have to outwrite, outwork, outperform, and outwit your competitors. You must offer followers a more attractive reason to follow you above the rest.

Before you can lead, you yourself must be a follower first. And STOP with the “follower for follower” already!

Follow professionals in your field and learn from them. Learning is one of the most common reasons people follow professionals. Gather as much knowledge as you possibly can.

Gathering knowledge on a niche or subject is “step one” of affiliate marketing. NOT generating sales!

How To Gain Followers Without Asking.

Besides all the “identifying a common need”, and “offering a proven solution” which we’re not going to get into right now. All of that is already covered in several other articles on Medium.

Quality content can be based on 4 factors, the 4 most common reasons the majority of people search the internet for. They are mostly looking for the following.

Solutions To Problems.

Answers To Questions.

Guides To Achieve Goals.

Free Stuff.

If you can meet these criteria with your content, based on your niche and a common need. Then you will be giving people a reason to follow you. But as mentioned earlier, be prepared to fail, a lot, before that happens.

If you want to gain quality followers, then you must provide quality solutions! That means coming up with your own solutions to problems that your target audience has.

As illustrated above, one of my most active readers and followers. He mentions how he found a solution to his online growth issue with a particular content marketing strategy.

When you offer solutions to problems and help people achieve goals. You will be surprised at how “quickly” you can build a responsive follower count.

Fewer Followers Equals More Responses.

When people follow you without being asked or bribed, then it means they are interested in your content! And an interested audience is an active audience.

Below is illustrated a strategy I tested with Facebook to grow a Facebook group audience. Members rose by 75%, while “active members” made up over 70% of the total 421 group members.

My point is that you want to take your time and reach the people most likely to find your content useful. Getting followers from a “cars and accessories” audience when you have “how to lose weight” content.

Well, that completely defeats the purpose. The audience is interested in cars and accessories, they DO NOT want to lose weight! Not necessarily! Building a targeted audience takes a lot more time!

When you are aiming to build a responsive follower count, you must pay attention to profiles. STOP with the “follower for follower” idea already. That is precisely how you gain inactive followers!

Having a huge follower count can be fairly “easy”. Having a huge RESPONSIVE follower count, not so much!

Gaining More Followers On Medium.

I have started over with Medium, this is why my follower count is still growing. Just want to put this “out there”. The reasons for my starting over, have already been discussed in another article.

Kind of like a guide to NOT do what I did previously. Starting over, however, has its advantages. This time I am starting with over a decade’s knowledge behind me.

At the time of writing this article, my new Medium profile was around 2 and a half weeks “old”. With a follower count of 55, and one email subscriber.

Day 18 and it would seem I may just reach my goal of 1000 views in the first month. While my follower goal would seem to be needing a bit longer than a month to reach 100 active followers!

It is still a work in progress, but growth is constant and consistent with a rather satisfying “read” count. Therefore, I can share with you a way I found that attracts quality followers. Less is more, right?

I find that leveraging comments with Medium works rather well in gaining responsive followers. In doing so building an active audience. But do not just focus on the large follower count profiles.

When you comment, also pay attention to the other comments on the particular post. Respond to other comments offer value, and pay attention to their profiles and topics they follow or are interested in.

A professional profile bio will pop up when you move your cursor over a person’s profile in a comment (on a desktop). This is how you can see interests and follower counts.

Check out their profiles, see what they write about and be sure that you are on the same mission. Respond to the profiles most related to your own content.

Then move on to another related post, rinse and repeat, and keep going. It works for me, and I am pretty sure these basics will work for you too.

The Added Advantage Of Gaining Followers.

When you use commenting (among other strategies) to gain followers and build a responsive audience. Pay attention to what people are talking about, it is a good way to find topics to write about.

This particular article idea was sparked around a conversation about the “Medium Follower Challenge”. Judging by the comments and topic, the whole “follow for follow” idea (among others) is discussed.

So, I decided to share my experience and strategies used to gain followers and build a responsive audience. A topic well within my level of knowledge at this point.

In a nutshell, the quality of your content and the amount of time spent interacting with audiences. These are two crucial ingredients to building a responsive follower count.

Which is why I love commenting so much as a way of building followers. It attracts responsive followers, and it gives the best indication of what to write about.
