Fashion & You
25,000 Followers on Instagram: A Milestone in My Story with DeLanie’s Fashion
And counting…
Yesterday, the total number of followers on my fashion Instagram page, delanies_fashion, hit 25,000!
It was an emotional moment for me as memories flooded back to when I started the business in a humble corner of my house in Kaduna, Nigeria.
At the time, I had no major plans. All I wanted to do was sew for myself with a machine I had saved up to buy. And looks awesome.
The pivotal moment came when a friend saw my attire and asked if I could make one for her.
So I did.
The Birth of DeLanie’s
Soon, others asked if I could do the same for them. Before long, I bought another sewing machine and opened a small shop. DeLanie’s Fashion was born.
The city was already filled with fashion outlets, so my business was nothing more than a drop in the ocean.
But you wait.
Within two short years, the most respected fashion houses in the city started recognizing DeLanie’s as a formidable competitor. The media interviewed me a couple of times; bloggers rated my business highly. I became well-known for creating exquisite princess dresses.
Diving Into the Digital World
Reluctantly, I decided to transition my business to the online sphere. What I’ve always cherished the most about designing is witnessing my clients beam with joy when they try on a new dress or learn something new. You know, face to face.
On social media, though, it’s more about relating with cameras, creating posts, and monitoring stats. Not exactly my forte.
My friends egged me on. They said I could grow my audience by paying for it. It seemed like everyone was doing it.
I decided, though, that if I was going to “go digital”, I would grow my audience organically. It was the least I could do if we couldn’t see face to face. To me, connecting with people has always been the top priority.
What Now?
As I grow the fashion business arm in Canada, I intend to delve deeper into the digital world. That includes writing (Hello, Medium!) and creating videos.
I will be creating fashion content on Medium that will be helpful to anyone starting a business or who wants to make clothes exclusively for themselves and/or their family from the comfort of their homes.
I haven’t decided on the best way to do this, though. All I do have in mind now is a working title: Fashion & You.
It would be my pleasure if you could join me on this journey and discover the joys of dressmaking firsthand.
Cheers to the next 25k!
