24 Hours… as a Grandparent
(Lesson’s From My Grandchild)
Becoming a grandparent has been one of my greatest joys.
It has also made me truly realize why you are encouraged to have children earlier in life.
When you are…
Younger. Fitter. Healthier.
When raising my children, I’d always taken my abundant energy for granted.
Now that I have become a grandparent, I realize how important youth is.
…
My granddaughter is two and a half years old.
She has become my greatest teacher.
She teaches me to stop and take in the world around me.
Each day I spend with her, I come away from it a better person.
Look she screams “birdies” when a flock of birds swoops overhead.
I had not noticed them.
The car is getting wet she exclaims watching the heavy downpour of rain outside which she watches fascinated.
She teaches me to look at the simple things happening around us.
She teaches me to go with the flow. When she throws off her shoes and socks and walks barefooted outdoors. Wincing at the uneven surface beneath her feet but determined to continue.
She teaches me patience when I try to hurry her along. “Wait a minute” she calls, “I’m looking at the flowers”.
She teaches me to smile. From the moment I see her, she rushes into my arms. She has unconditional love and trust that I will take care of her.
She teaches me to be in the moment.
Because frankly, I cannot take my eyes off her even for a moment.
She is an explorer, an adventurer of her world.
She still needs to learn that you cannot climb onto the tabletops or touch the hot oven.
Most of all she reminds me that I’m not so young anymore.
As I try to sit on the floor to play at her level.
She squeals, “Come on granny” confused at how long it takes me to simply sit down and then get up again.
I cannot describe the joy it has been to become a grandmother.
The love is different from the love I felt for my daughter.
A different bond. A grandparent bond that I cannot fully describe.
She is precious and delightful all in one.
And makes 24 hours pass so quickly but so tiring.
