2024 The Year Of Lay Offs: Struggling To Find Work as A Travel Nurse

Job security doesn’t exist and it will get worse

Recently, I came across a story by Michelle Teheux Here’s What They Really Mean When They Say Nobody Wants To Work Anymore made me think. It reveals a deeper truth that is often overlooked. I was inspired to write about this topic as well.

That is why anyone who is unemployed or underemployed, this article will really resonate with you. I am writing this to let you know you aren’t alone.

Are layoffs limited to only white collar or IT jobs?

Nope.

Even in the field of nursing, which is often seen as a secure job opportunity, there are no guarantees for long-term employment. The popular saying “with nursing, you will always have a job” may not hold true in today’s uncertain economic climate.

My husband is a travel RN and he’s had a hard time finding a new assignment. The hospitals don’t want to pay for what they used to. They’re offering salaries that are less than what was normal before the pandemic hit.

And meanwhile, everything is more expensive these days.

As for me, I’m writing part-time and working on my e-book, but the publishing platforms looking at you Medium either don’t want to pay at all or they offer peanuts.

Layoffs are happening in practically every industry in America nowadays, not just in IT.

The future of jobs is looking pretty bleak. And with the stagnating economy and AI tech-porn it will just get worse.

Not only in America, but companies like Amazon also attempted to cut jobs in Europe last year. However, it proved to be more challenging due to union and job protection laws in place.

Nevertheless, I have no doubt that profit-driven companies will find ways around these laws in order to lay off employees in Europe as well.

So this year, we’re focusing on trying to live off the farm as much as possible. With about $500, we can survive a month here in Spain, deep in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

We’ve got the vegetables growing in the garden and the chickens give us eggs every day. We are planning to get pigs and more chickens for extra protein. Sorry I love my meat.

It’s not an super-easy lifestyle, but it feels a lot more stable than trying to rely on employers.

At least this way, we’ve got some food security. And we’re living a simpler, less materialistic life, which feels good. We don’t have a mortgage or any other big payments.

Living in a sustainable way is paying off. I feel really bad for folks who have mortgages and car payments, student loans, etc. They are screwed…And it is just going to get worse.

United States real GDP Growth is forecasted to be 1.4 % in 2024 as reported by the International Monetary Fund. For EU is 1.3% and for Spain 1.7%.

Acceptable rate for GDP growth is between 2–3%, which means the economy is growing.

According to this data economy will be stagnating this year and I am expecting more layoffs and less job opportunities.

As the economy continues its downward spiral, more and more people will find themselves struggling to make ends meet. The promise of job security had become a distant memory, replaced by a constant fear of layoffs and financial instability.

Working for low wages is not a solution. I can see that people are exhausted from juggling 2 or 3 jobs just to make ends meet.

This cannot continue.

How is everyone holding up? Have you faced any challenges this year with finding employment?

At least you can be thankful that you did not pursue nursing for job security, as it no longer exists.
