20 Things That Make Me Smile

A writer’s prompt and a sign

Last night, my 18-year-old daughter showed me her newest TikTok video, which consisted of her favorite 20 things. Then, this morning, I came across a writer’s prompt to explore 20 things that make me smile. Well, those two facts lead to my list below and particularly to the first item on that list:

  1. When the Universe aligns and provides signs that I should do something
  2. Dancing in crowded places as if no one is there
  3. Reconnecting with an old friend
  4. Puppy kisses and smells
  5. Concerts that enable me to feel the bass in my chest
  6. Hearing detailed stories about loved ones who have passed
  7. Dogs’ heads peeking out car windows
  8. Determined little kids in too-big sports gear on game day
  9. Colorful sunsets that are living art
  10. Driving with windows down, music playing, and someone I love passionately belting out every lyric
  11. Unexpected flower deliveries
  12. My guy’s arms wrapped around me
  13. New sparkly makeup
  14. Radiohead music popping up in favorite TV shows
  15. Gardens’ colors, smells, and peacefulness
  16. Thinking about a book’s characters when I’m not reading
  17. Walking into a pretty hotel room
  18. Chocolate chip cookie dough
  19. Talking philosophy with my adult children
  20. Finishing a piece of writing

This writing challenge, for me, resided not in the writing but rather in keeping this list to only 20 things! One of my philosophies about living is to find the joy, embrace the beauty and relish in the simple moments. So, finding reasons to smile is what it is all about.

Thank you to Nancy Blackman and Refresh the Soul for this prompt.
