Plato is one of the most important philosophers. His teacher Socrates, and his student Aristotle are considered to be Western philosophy’s pivotal figures.

Plato was the innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms in philosophy. He also found political philosophy.

If you are a parent, wanting to raise a child in the right way, give this a read. If only I was raised like this. If only my moral compass didn’t need fixing. I could save these years of fixing myself.

I wouldn’t need 20+ years to get where I am now. Maybe I could write years earlier. Who knows. But YOU can be that person. You can change, now. Don’t waste a single day.

I got influenced by his work. But more importantly, I tried adapting some of his quotes in my daily life.

His quotes can make your life improve. At all levels. Let’s look at some of the most important ones. I’ll highlight those I have already adopted in my life.

  1. “Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.”
  2. “We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”
  3. “Only the dead have seen the end of the war.”
  4. “The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”
  5. “Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”
  6. “The heaviest penalty for declining to rule is to be ruled by someone inferior to yourself.”
  7. “Never discourage anyone…who continually makes progress, no matter how slow.”
  8. “Love is a serious mental disease.”
  9. “good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws”
  10. “Ignorance, the root and stem of every evil.”
  11. “If women are expected to do the same work as men, we must teach them the same things.”
  12. “There is truth in wine and children”
  13. “Education is teaching our children to desire the right things.”
  14. “The beginning is the most important part of the work.”
  15. “The object of education is to teach us to love what is beautiful.”
  16. “A house that has a library in it has a soul.”
  17. “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
  18. “Those who can see beyond the shadows and lies of their culture will never be understood, let alone believed, by the masses.”
  19. “No man should bring children into the world who is unwilling to persevere to the end in their nature and education.”
  20. “Character is simply a habit long continued.”

He gets me thinking. He gets me to be a better teacher — to whoever I taught and I will teach. Resisting your urge to teach based on your version of the truth is hard. But it’s necessary (Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar would be proud).

We get caught up with life and we forget how to live. Leave your professional life aside for a while. Focus on becoming a better you. This way, you’ll be better in every field.
