Summary

The 20/80 Rule, or Pareto Principle, suggests that focusing on the most impactful 20% of tasks can yield 80% of the results, optimizing productivity in writing, work, and personal life.

Abstract

The 20/80 Rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, posits that a small portion of effort (20%) is responsible for the majority of results (80%). Originally observed by economist Vilfredo Pareto in the distribution of wealth, this principle is applicable across various domains, including writing on platforms like Medium, where a minority of articles generate most of the views. The article advises that by identifying and prioritizing the top 20% of tasks based on priority, importance, and potential impact, individuals can maximize their productivity. This approach involves completing the two most significant tasks out of ten and continuously re-evaluating remaining tasks to focus on the most valuable ones. The principle encourages tackling the most challenging tasks first for a greater sense of accomplishment and efficiency.

The 20/80 rule suggests that 20% of the effort accounts for 80% of the results. This rule is also called the Pareto principle, which is named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto.

In 1896 Pareto noticed that 80% of the wealth in Italy was controlled by the top 20% of the population.

if you are a writer on medium take a look at your stats. You will notice that 20% of your stories are responsible for 80% of your views.

This principle can also be adopted in the strategical planning of the activities in any business. So, how does this work?

How to apply the 20/80 rule at work

Applying the principle in work suggests that 2 tasks out of 10 are worth the other 8 tasks together. Typically, people try to finish the small items first before taking aim at their biggest most important task. This practice will keep them busy and feeling unaccomplished at the end of the day.

To apply the 20/80 at work simply write down the tasks, which need to be finalized in a given day or week, grade the tasks by priority, importance, and turn over. Now chose the top 20% of these tasks. For this example let’s assume 10 tasks.

After finishing tasks one and two, the remaining 8 tasks can be evaluated again and the topmost 20% of these tasks can be chosen and so on. Keep doing this until you are left with 4 tasks. Finalize these tasks from most important to less important.

The most valuable task is usually the hardest and the most time-consuming task of the bunch, but the reward and sense of accomplishment from this task can be remarkable.

Go for the big fish first and do not be tempted by the smaller ones.

Using the 20/80 rule can lead to huge benefits at work, university and also can be used for your budget. It can be adapted and adopted in different aspects of life. Start by using it to increase your efficiency and afterward you can apply it step-for-step in different aspects of your life.
