2 Ways Self-Growth Is All But Selfishness

#2: Focusing on yourself benefits the society

At first look, taking the path of self-development probably leads one to have less time dedicated to others and to the world around. Nevertheless that doesn’t mean that one is by consequence selfish or too self-centred (or maybe yes but not in a pejorative way).

Bellow 2 ways I perceive self-growth as benefiting above the self:

#1: The more you grow, the more you want to help others grow

People who are committed to growth and constant improvement are among the first ones who are willing to share what they learn on the way with others. Same as food: knowledge tastes better when shared. Self-growth junkies burn to contribute and apply all that they learn along the way of self development. The more more you grow, the more you want to help others grow; and the more you help others grow, the more you grow in return. It is a virtuous circle.

#2: Focusing on your own growth benefits the society

Individuals who are self-development oriented are people who crave independence and self-sufficiency. They are therefore less willing to depend on the society. Instead they’re driven to create value for themselves and for the environment they live in.

So yes, self growth oriented individuals may tend to spend less time focused on all that is going around — and that is mostly because they want to focus on what is within their control for their sanity. But that is not a sign that they don’t care about the world state or others. They are just aware that the ones they have higher chances of having control over is themselves. And the more self-sufficient, self-conscious, self-aware, self-disciplined individuals, the more the collective can be enriched and thus benefiting immensely to the society.

“Human security recognises the importance of individuals and that the key to ensuring growth in developing countries is to foster individual talent and abilities, build self-reliance, and put people in a position to make a broader contribution to society. Growth must be inclusive, and no one must be left behind.” — Shinzo Abe

Until next time dear reader, thank you. Take gorgeous care of yourself, drink you water and remember to breathe from the belly ;)
