2 Things Needed to See Magic Around You

It’s everywhere if you know what to look for.

"I’m certain that if I believe that the world is wondrous, fascinating, and mysterious, then I will be curious, aware, and attentive to everything around me, eager not to miss out on that next special moment. And for me, that’s as good a start as anything else I can think of." Jon Turk

The ability to experience Magic simply consists of only two things. Belief and curiosity.

I capitalize Magic as a matter of emphasis, to place magic back on our list of important things.

The Power of Belief

Magic is a loaded word - still - in our modern world. Filled with inferences of trickery and sleight-of-hand or even downright evil, magic is often overlooked and we miss the wonder that it is.

One must believe that Magic is real - the magic that Jon Turk describes... the wondrous, the fascinating, the mysterious. Without the belief, Magic just doesn't even bother to show up. It hides behind logic, reason, science, theories, and lengthy over-thought explanations.

There’s a common saying that “seeing is believing,” but we’d do well to see the flip side of that. “Believing is seeing!” When it comes to Magic and Wonder, it is Believing that they exist that begins to open our eyes.

The Power of Curiosity

Once we believe in the possibility of Magic, we can — now that our eyes are open to it — begin to look around and notice, with curiosity, that Magic is everywhere.

When you begin to believe in Magic, it happily comes out of hiding but isn't always easily recognizable because we are conditioned to see what Magic hides behind. Curiosity is the key to open recognition. Curiosity breeds the awareness and attentiveness that leads to Magical experiences.

Here’s a quote from Roald Dahl, author and master of Magic. If you haven’t seen the BFG (Big Friendly Giant), I’d recommend it for a good dose of Magic.

"And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it." ― Roald Dahl

I was guilty for years of missing the wonder around me, even when I was drawn to it. I knew that getting out of the city after a stressful day to find a hilltop from which to stargaze was what my soul needed, but I wasn't curious enough to go deeper with the experience to get to know my soul and indeed the magic and mystery of the world around me.

Now, I am curiously and intensely paying attention to signs.

I use oracles, synchronicities, imagination, and dreams to help me tune in to Magic.

Author Michael Scott gives us a tip for noticing and experiencing Magic.

“Magic is really only the utilization of the entire spectrum of the senses. Humans have cut themselves off from their senses. Now they see only a tiny portion of the visible spectrum, hear only the loudest of sounds, their sense of smell is shockingly poor and they can only distinguish the sweetest and sourest of tastes.”

― Michael Scott, The Alchemyst

I write about using the entire spectrum (both inner and outer) in this article…
