2 Simple Questions to Help You Take a Risk Despite The Fear
And help you analyze if it’s worth taking or not
It is not good to always play it safe. If you do this, you have basically made the decision to settle for mediocrity.
No one in history achieved great feats by not having the guts to take on new, challenging opportunities. Sitting in the shadows all your life and not taking any risks basically means the best you can hope for is a comfortable, boring existence.
I like the below quote from Troy when we look at weighing up two paths. The safe path and the risky path.
Thetis: If you stay in Larissa, you will find peace. You will find a wonderful woman, and you will have sons and daughters, who will have children. And they’ll all love you and remember your name. But when your children are dead, and their children after them, your name will be forgotten… If you go to Troy, glory will be yours. They will write stories about your victories in thousands of years!
Achilles' name is not remembered to this day because he sat quietly and was micro-managed to hell by his manager. He didn’t work the same soulless job for 40+ years to get a good pension and retire at 65. He didn't let concerns about inflation and the increase in energy prices talk him out of doing what he was born to do. He knew he had to chase his dreams to leave behind a great legacy.
When you are thinking about taking a risk, ask yourself these simple questions.
What legacy do I want to leave behind?
Will doing what I do now help me achieve this legacy or do I need to take a big risk?
There is no denying that going off course can be terrifying. You may have built a pretty decent setup for yourself. But if every day when you punch in and sit in that small cubicle you feel empty inside, you need to recognize this.
I have had this problem for years. Feeling zombified and dead inside and wanting to do something else with my life. But then I see the nice paycheck come in and I get drunk with my friends. Then the motivation to take action subsides.
But knowing that your life's legacy depends on having the courage to take these risks can be fuel to spur you on.
Thinking about legacy can seem very narcissistic and single-minded. You may have other people depending on you. But the people around you will also be better off in the long run if you are able to be your authentic self and actually tackle life with some enthusiasm and purpose.
Some risks, whether they work out or not have to be taken.
As Big Tony Robbins once said (many times)
“Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.”
I am not saying if you are unhappy in your life you should start aimlessly gambling and trying to hit the jackpot. This is destined for disaster.
But if there is something inside that is urging you on and you know would help leave behind a legacy you would be proud of, you need to seriously consider taking the risk.
