2 Personality Traits That Consistent People Don’t Have

And how to avoid them.

Someone hung up the phone…for the 100th time. I did at least 200 cold-calls before I gave up trying to start my writing business.

Then I tried selling sneakers on eBay only to buy 500 dollars worth of them and see them sit in a box in my basement after two years.

Then I tried starting a social media marketing agency only to get three potential clients that never responded to my calls and one that wanted to pay me dust.

I blamed everything on the system, but I had two personality traits that held me back from being consistent at these failed business ventures.

Here they are.

1. Ignorance

Inconsistent people hate change.

They love staying in the same hole of “if it ain't broke, don’t fix it”. They will ignore every piece of advice given to them to stroke their ego. Then they’ll stay up at night wondering why their old recipe isn’t working.

Consistency doesn’t mean working hard with the same recipe. It’s about changing your recipe as much as possible to see what works in each new time period.

Inconsistent people can’t adapt because they’re swimming in denial rather than looking at the bigger picture.

What to do instead:

Instead of remaining ignorant of what’s not working, educate yourself more on the craft. Read a few articles from the pioneers in your field and see what they did in order to get to a high level.

I failed at all of those businesses because I never studied the greats of my field. Once you read an article by one of those greats, you’ll realize that the road wasn’t easy for them and it won’t be easy for you unless you’re willing to put in the work.

2. Arrogance

Once people gain traction in their career, they start to use that short moment as the moment of their lifetime. After the balloon deflates, they keep their arrogance because that short moment was the only moment they could have.

They don’t think they can do better. Do you see the irony?

These are the same inconsistent people that hop careers for a come-up to make money. They get a few accolades and think they’ve won the jackpot.

Meanwhile, consistent people don’t count on short moments to keep them at a high level. They don’t faint at the thought of awards. Their main goal is to keep improving and that takes a ton of failure.

Failure takes humility. Inconsistent people are too arrogant to accept failure.

What to do instead:

The best way to get rid of arrogance is to poke fun at your flaws. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve written an article and laughed at how bad it was.

As Biannca Frazier once said:

Arrogance is trying to convince others you’re more than who they thought you are.

Stop worrying about the perception of others and embrace the fact that you’re going to suck at the beginning of your career. It’s okay to have bumps in the road along the way. The more you learn from failure, the more success you’ll have.

Final Thoughts

Consistent people aren’t ignorant or arrogant.

They thrive on failure to improve their craft every single day. They see what works and create new recipes that the public might enjoy.

Consistent people leave those personality traits out the door because they love what they do and they won’t settle for mediocrity. So what are you waiting for?

Start now and never give up.
