2 Easy Ways To Get FREE Publicity

Being a published author also opens up the door for you to get media attention and more visibility, such as being featured in an article or interviewed on a podcast, which continues to give you and your business more exposure. This can happen either as a result of you using your book effectively as a marketing tool or in an effort to sell copies of it — or both. Either way, publicity is an all-around good idea.

The two main ways I have found to get publicity for free are to be quoted or featured in articles and to be a guest on a podcast.

A third option is to write a press release and either send it out yourself to a list you already have of media contacts (you can also purchase a list of media contacts) or use a press release service that will send it out to its media contacts.

Articles

The best way I have found to get featured in or quoted in articles without having to individually find and pitch writers and publications is by using HARO, which stands for Help A Reporter Out and is at www.HelpAReporter.com. You can go to the website and sign up as a “source” to help writers get the information they need, and it is free.

You will receive three emails per day with a list of articles different reporters or bloggers are writing in various categories like health, finance, lifestyle, business, etc., and they are all looking for sources to be featured in them. Their request will include any requirements, an email address, and a deadline for answers. If you write an insightful or useful response, you may be quoted in their article and it will be attributed to you by name, often also with your picture or a link to your site.

Here is an example of a HARO request:

Podcasts

When it comes to podcasts, there are so many out there, and it can be difficult to find out who is looking for guests and how to submit yourself as a potential guest to a show. Podcasts are incredibly popular and they can be extremely useful for publicity. To find podcast opportunities, check out www.PodcastGuests.com.

You can sign up for the free mailing list on the website or even choose to pay a subscription fee to be a “featured guest,” meaning you’ll be featured at the top of the emails with your picture, a short bio, and what type of podcasts you’d be a good guest for, as the emails also go to podcasters.

You’ll receive emails every other day or so with a list of different podcasts looking for guests to be on their shows. They are listed with the title of the podcast, the topics they cover, their publisher, what they are looking for in a guest, and a link to submit yourself (or someone else) to the podcast to be considered. Here is an example of a podcast looking for a guest:

Being featured in articles and interviewed on podcasts is really fun! Every time I am featured or interviewed, I add the link for it to my Media page on my website and it’s a great way to get more exposure.
