So read on to learn how you can start feeling better about yourself today.
What is Self-Esteem?
Before we get to why your self-esteem matters and how it can help you, let’s discuss just what this thing called “self-esteem” really is.
Self-esteem is essentially a person’s overall evaluation and judgment of their character based on their thoughts and opinions. It’s the way that you view yourself based on your thoughts, behavior, actions, feelings, and opinions of yourself.
How Your Self-Esteem Affects You
You may think that self-esteem isn’t important to have, but it is for your overall happiness. People who have higher levels of self-esteem are found to experience more positive emotions, are more satisfied with their lives, are better at coping with their problems, enjoy better relationships, and are more successful in interpersonal relationships.
What is your self-esteem like?
Is it helping you succeed at the things that matter to you? Ask yourself these questions to find out:
• Do I think that others believe I am a good person?
• Am I confident in my ability to solve problems?
• Do I feel that life has dealt me a good hand?
• Do I have a sense of purpose and meaning in my life?
These are just a few questions to ask yourself as you think about your self-esteem. If you’re having difficulty answering these questions or answering them truthfully, it could be a sign that you need to work on bolstering your self-esteem.
How You Can Boost Your Self-Esteem
So, what can you do to boost your low self-esteem? There are many things.
1. Develop a positive attitude towards yourself.
That means accepting who you are and having a positive view of yourself. This means that you need to accept your flaws as well as your good qualities, and mean it when you say positive things about yourself! It’s about believing them and sticking with them even when the going gets tough.
2. Put yourself first.
Take the time to meet your basic needs such as sleeping, exercising, and eating healthy foods so that you can get to a point where you feel good about yourself and believe in yourself. Getting enough sleep is especially important because it improves concentration and memory which will help you accomplish more. Exercise is also great for boosting self-esteem.
3. Get into a group that supports your goals.
Joining like-minded groups or activities will allow you to see yourself in a positive light, which over time will boost your self-esteem and make you feel happier about yourself.
This could be anything from joining an art club to taking up running. It doesn’t matter what you choose as long as it’s something you enjoy and that will make you feel good.
4. Spend time with positive people.
You are the company you keep! If your friends don’t believe in themselves and like who they are, chances are neither, do you. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people who like themselves and want the best for you. You will be influenced by them and feel better about yourself.
5. Focus on your good qualities and accomplishments.
Be proud of the things you’ve done and remember that we all make mistakes! It’s okay to make a mistake, but it’s not okay to humiliate yourself or put yourself down over it. That will only cause you to believe that mistake and lose your confidence.
6. Give yourself credit for the things you do well.
This ties a bit into number 5, but it’s different because it’s about giving yourself credit for all of your hard work and success. Don’t wait until someone else pats you on the back or tells you that you did a good job, be proactive and tell yourself! You deserve to feel proud of your accomplishments and give yourself credit for them.
7. Learn to accept compliments gracefully and give compliments frequently.
Accepting a compliment can be difficult because we’re conditioned from a young age to say “Oh it was nothing” or “You’re just saying that.” It’s not about simply accepting the compliment, it’s also about believing what you’re being told. If someone tells you that you did a good job or your outfit looks nice, believe them.
8. Accept your flaws.
You are human which means you will make mistakes and have flaws, no one is perfect. Some people love you for the person that you are, including your flaws! If someone loves you, there’s a good chance they will love you with your flaws. However, if someone doesn’t accept you for all of who you are it might be time to look at why they might not like some of the things about yourself.
9. Learn to forgive yourself.
If you make a mistake or do something you regret, learn from it and move on. Don’t let the negative feelings about what you did get the best of you. Acknowledge your mistake, accept it then work on forgiving yourself. Forgiveness is often very difficult but once you can learn to forgive yourself for your mistakes it will help you in forgiving others for theirs.
10. Be kind to yourself when you need a break.
Everyone needs a break from time to time, and that includes taking some time out for yourself! It doesn’t matter how busy you are, if you’re feeling overwhelmed and stressed the best thing you can do for yourself is to stop and take a break. Take some time out to do something you enjoy and unwind. It will help recharge your batteries and improve your mood!
11. Love yourself unconditionally.
You can’t truly love other people in your life if you don’t love yourself first and foremost! We must learn to be happy with who we are and what we look like so that even when other people aren’t around or things aren’t going our way, we’ll still be able to love ourselves. When you truly love yourself, it’s much easier to accept the positive qualities others see in you too!
12. Remember who you are.
This may sound silly but it’s something that can help you tremendously. It’s easy to lose yourself in the shuffle of daily life, so it’s important to take some time out for yourself once in a while. Remember who you are and what makes you special, make sure your daily routine includes things that help define who you are as an individual.
13. Embrace who you are.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t beautiful enough or good enough because those people don’t matter at all. They’re probably just jealous of how amazing you are! Don’t measure your happiness by other people’s opinions, just do you while loving everything that makes you unique.
14. Do something every day that makes you happy.
Whether it’s listening to music, reading a book, watching TV, or having a bubble bath when you do something every day that makes you happy it will help boost your mood! It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant or expensive, but whatever makes you happy go for it.
15. Get enough sleep.
Getting enough sleep is very important for your mental health. Making sure you get 7–8 hours of sleep every night is extremely beneficial to your mental state and overall wellbeing. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, tired, or just down in the dumps, it’s very possible that a lack of sleep could be causing it so if you feel this way try to catch up on some sleep.
16. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
We all have moments in our lives where we feel overwhelmed and just need some help, which is fine! There’s nothing wrong with asking for help every once in a while, plus doing so shows that you trust the people in your life enough to not let you down! If you find yourself in a sticky situation and you don’t know what to do, ask someone close to you for some advice or their help.
17. Treat your body right by eating well and exercising regularly.
Sometimes achieving our goals is difficult but if we make a conscious effort to work toward them every day, they become much more achievable. So, whether you want to run a marathon, eat healthier, or just put down the chocolate bar every once in a while, try your best to achieve what you set out for.
18. Treat random acts of kindness like an addiction.
Make it your goal to spread joy by being kind whenever you can. Think about how good it feels when someone does something nice for you, and treat others the way you’d like to be treated.
You can make someone’s day by simply holding a door open for them or paying for their coffee in the morning. It doesn’t cost any money but it will leave an impression on both of you that will stay with you forever.
The bottom line
There are so many things that could have been included on this list but I think it’s important to remember that everyone is different and no one can tell you what exactly will make you happy. Take what you will from this and apply it to your own life, and remember that no matter what you should always be taking care of yourself.
