$15 an Hour Will Not Solve Your Problems or Make You Rich
It Will Still Be Minimum Wage
In America and Canada, politicians and trade unions are advocating for a legal minimum wage of $15 an hour. Some of those advocating for this are earning salaries of $100,000 or more a year, much more in some cases, and some are millionaires.
Bernie Sanders, the United States senator who is advocating for a minimum wage of $15 an hour, makes an annual salary of $174,000. Senator Sanders is also a millionaire.
Some of these leaders have called $15 an hour a “living wage.” What kind of life can someone in North America have on $15 an hour?
It is political spin
The politicians are looking for votes; they don’t care about you. They make promises they can’t or won’t keep.
In 2017 the liberal government of Ontario decided to legislate an increase in the minimum wage from $11.40 an hour to $14 an hour in 2018, and then to $15 an hour in 2019. The liberals had a majority in the provincial parliament.
This meant that the minimum wage in Ontario would increase by 22.81% in less than a year, and a year later by 7.14%.
Many businesses were not pleased with this sudden increase in their costs and took steps to protect themselves.
Retail stores cut staff and reduced the hours of the staff they kept.
Large grocery chains and pharmacies introduced self-checkouts. Walmart and Costco did.
The liberals lost the 2018 election and now, in 2021, the minimum wage is $14.25 an hour, not the $15 an hour the liberals promised.
Forcing employers to pay higher wages is counterproductive
Employers have to find ways to recover increased costs and they do so in several ways. As mentioned above, they cut staff. Another way is to increase the price of their products and services. These higher prices affect everyone, including those who were given a raise by the politicians. It’s a shell game, and inflationary.
You are being paid minimum wage because that is all you are worth to the employer
It sounds harsh but it is the truth. If you wish to earn more you have to offer more and do more, and to do so you may have to improve your knowledge and skill set.
Some employers encourage their employees to continue their education by refunding the cost of approved courses completed by their employees. If you work for such a generous employer, take full advantage of this benefit.
However, whether your employer pays for your education or not, take responsibility for your life by taking action to improve it.
Don’t depend on politicians to force your employers to pay you a higher minimum wage. It will still be minimum wage, and you will be at the mercy of the politicians.
At the end of the day, do you want politicians to decide how much you earn?
