Is Having A Lot of Followers on Medium Useless?
Let’s find out..

Big numbers, we all love them. But what we love more is seeing them increase at a high rate.
Having many followers is a flex. Whether that is on Instagram, Twitter (X), YouTube, or even Medium, a big following can be a sign of authority and ‘success’.
But is it really so?
The short answer is NO!
I’ve been on Twitter for 3 months now, and I have seen some creators with a huge following, yet the level of engagement does not match the clout the creator seems to have. I’m talking about having less than 30 likes when you have 30K+ followers.
You might first think that they bought their followers, but that’s not always the case..
That being said, others have 500 followers and get 40–60+ likes on their tweets.
That’s to say that a big following doesn’t really mean much.
But let’s go back to our topic, which is followers on Medium.
Having a large number of followers looks good. It gives you “status”.
But does that translate into more earnings? No!
When people follow you, they signal to the algorithm that they want to see stories from you and similar stories from other writers that they haven’t followed yet.

And since no one just follows 10 or 20 people, but more than that, you can already tell how flooded with content their suggestions would be. You’ll be just another face in the crowd.
And this is just for the case where they have followed you because they like your content (and Medium rewards that).
But do people follow you just because they like your content? Obviously not.
They follow you because:
- They want you to follow them back
- They want you to get notified so that maybe you can read their work
- They didn’t really think about why they did it
- Because they saw you engage more with others and would want you to engage with their stories
- …

and dropping a comment to share your thoughts with me :)Let me ask you a question.
What’s your reads/followers ratio? Is it high? Or is it low?
If it’s high, then there might be some correlation, meaning that most of those who follow you may read your stories.
But if it’s low, it means that your follow count is just a number.
In general, the number of readers is much lower than the number of followers.
So, no matter how small your number of followers is, as long as you have a decent amount of readers and earnings, you’re doing it right.
In an upcoming story, I’ll show you, with screenshots, that followers don’t even amount to views, let alone reads (I discovered a secret method to spy on people on Medium).
If you don’t want to miss out on that one:
