Summary

A 14-year-old girl from Texas named Anika Chebrolu has potentially discovered a cure for COVID-19 by identifying a lead compound that inhibits the coronavirus protein from entering cells.

Abstract

Anika Chebrolu, an exceptional teenager from Texas, has emerged as a potential world hero by identifying a lead compound that could cure COVID-19. Her discovery, which involved isolating a compound from a database of 698 million molecules, has the potential to prevent the coronavirus protein from entering human cells, thus stopping the virus's spread. Anika's journey began two years prior when she started researching past pandemics and epidemics, including the Spanish Flu. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, she shifted her focus to SARS-CoV-2, driven by her passion for medical research, which she balances with her interests in dance and art. Her work has not only positioned her as a scientific prodigy but also as an inspiration to her peers, showcasing the potential and drive of the younger generation to make a significant impact on the world.

Anika Chebrolu, 3M Young Scientist Challenge Winner could be a world hero. As Covid-19 struggles are beginning to emerge again in certain states, a young mind has put her time into helping solve what seems like the world's biggest problem right now. Yes, a Covid cure may be in the mind of a 14-Year-Old Girl. While scientists who are even as old as twice her age are scrambling for answers, this girl has gotten it all and has shocked the world with her incredible abilities in the field of science.

Anika, who had won $25,000 as prize money for the discovery, says that she “isolated” a single compound from a database of 698 million molecules. She describes herself as a typical teenager, who fittingly, wants to be a medical researcher. She does all of this while balancing her time with classical dance classes, and art. Anika is no ordinary girl.

What is it?

Anika has found a “lead compound” that has the ability to bind to the protein of the Coronavirus.” Thus stopping it from entering the cell. She has claimed that although her invention is a breakthrough, it was also a build on to the foundation that numerous scientists have already laid. She has not elaborated on it very much just yet, but will certainly do so in a little while, as soon as her findings are published.

Starting

The amazing journey of Anika starts way before any word of the pandemic. 2 years ago to be exact. At the age of 12, she started researching the Spanish Flu and other epidemics.

Here is what she claims:

“After spending so much time researching about pandemics, viruses and drug discovery, it was crazy to think that I was actually living through something like this. Because of the immense severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and the drastic impact it had made on the world in such a short time, I, with the help of my mentor, changed directions to target the SARS-CoV-2 virus”

Experience, knowledge, and passion are what got her to the position she is, and she is a firm believer in that as well.

Although all of the things are not exactly clear as to where this new phenom and her ideas are going to go, it is clear that she has placed an unbreakable foundation with what she has done and accomplished.

What is clear though is the number of people and other young minds she has inspired. As a 13-Year-Old myself, this shows me what my generation is ready to accomplish and do. As well as how much of a mark I can make if I want to.
