1. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

You’ll never watch The Matrix, Superman, or Memento the same way again.
Two drag-queens (Anthony/Mitzi and Adam/Felicia) and a transgender woman contract to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a resort town in the remote Australian desert. They head west from Sydney aboard their lavender bus, Priscilla. En route, it is discovered that the woman they’ve contracted with is Anthony’s wife. Their bus breaks down, and is repaired by Bob, who travels on with them.
Writing for the Guardian, film critic Peter Bradshaw said that in Adventures of Priscilla, “writer-director Stephan Elliott created a pioneering LGBT gem with this funny, smart and intensely lovable road-trip comedy — an anti-Crocodile Dundee. It’s about Tick (Weaving) and Adam (Pearce), Australian drag-queen short of cash who journey from Sydney to Alice Springs where Tick’s estranged straight wife, Marion (Sarah Chadwick), has got them a gig performing in a hotel lounge. This they do in a converted bus that they rename Priscilla and have to repaint, to cover the homophobic graffiti people have been spraying on it. But they must also do in the company of Bernadette, startlingly played by Stamp, a trans woman and artiste who has just been widowed and needs a new life direction.”

2. Different For Girls (1996)

Kim Foyle (Steven Mackintosh) is a postoperative trans woman who values her well-structured lifestyle. That routine, however, is disturbed when a car accident reintroduces Kim to Paul Prentice (Rupert Graves). As youngsters in Catholic school, they excelled in making trouble, a talent Paul never outgrew. Paul does not recognize Kim as his childhood pal, and she does not remind him, fearing rejection. However, a budding romance between them is complicated when Paul realizes who Kim used to be.
3. Just Like A Woman (1992)

Gerald Tilson (Adrian Pasdar) is a yuppie-like trans person in their thirties. Their wife arrives home earlier than expected and discovers female attire spread over their apartment. Not knowing anything about Gerald’s habit, she misinterprets this and throws them (and the attire) out of their home and marriage. Gerald rents a room in Monica’s (Dame Julie Walters’) house, recently divorced and around fifty. Their relationship evolves from landlady and tenant, to friends, to lovers. Monica learns about, begins to understand and finally appreciates and supports Geraldine, Gerald’s alter-ego.
This movie was based on true events described in Monica Jay’s biographical novel “Geraldine, For the Love of a Transvestite.” However, the names of any real people have been changed to protect their identities.
4. Flawless (1999)

An ultraconservative security guard suffers a debilitating stroke and is assigned to a rehabilitative program that includes singing lessons, with the trans woman next door.

9. The Joneses (2016)

Moby Longinotto’s feature documentary debut tells the story of Jheri Jones, a 74 year old transgender divorcee, and her family in Bible Belt Mississippi. Reconciled after years of estrangement, and now living with two of her four sons in her trailer park home, Jheri embarks on a new path to reveal her true self to her grandchildren while her son Trevor begins a surprising journey of his own. THE JONESES is a compelling documentary about an unorthodox family and the deeply complex personal bonds that make or break us.

BONUS! Better Than Chocolate

A young, closeted lesbian grapples with concealing her budding relationship from her family, who have unexpectedly become her roommates.
I was unsure whether to include this one until a retrospective by Drew Gregory at AutoStraddle left me sure it should be seen at least once. You’ll find the trans character in the main character’s friend Judy, a trans lesbian depicted way back in 1999 as being accepted by default into a group of lesbian friends.
Makes me wonder if Kevin Smith should retcon at least one or two trans lesbians into Chasing Amy.
