11 Sites to Find Freelance Writing Jobs Right Now

Does not include Upwork.

So, I’ve written before about finding clients through social media like Instagram and how to directly email potential clients/companies.

Those are the two main ways I have historically marketed myself.

However, I also access job boards and find new clients that way, and I want to highlight certain sites that I have found are good for applying to freelance roles.

Now, I am not going to mention Upwork or Fiverr or other content mill-type sites in this post. If you’ve been with me for a while, you already know why but in case you’re new here: I do not use or like these sites. Especially Upwork and their ilk. I feel it is a race to the bottom and the pay rates are too low and perpetuate a vicious cycle of valuing quantity over quality.

I am also not going to list LinkedIn, Indeed, Careerbuilder, etc. While they ARE online job sites that sometimes list freelance roles, I personally have found that they are not great for freelance job searching. There also tends to be a lot of competition here, making it less likely to get a response to your application.

All of the below job sites are FREE. There are also some that are more of a fee-based or subscription-based model, such as SolidGigs and FlexJobs.

I have actively used a few of these and others are recommendations from other freelancers in my network.

Job Boards for Freelancing

Remote.com is a large job board with listings for all types of freelancers, not just writers. It also has web design jobs, coders, translator jobs, and more. It is specific for remote roles and has a lot of variety.

ProBlogger is another one I think has a solid amount of varying types of freelance jobs with decent pay rates and is easy to use.

Craigslist. OK, so I know some people won’t agree with me on this. But I have definitely found good clients on CL. They have a “writing/editing” category under Jobs and a “writing” category under Gigs and I check both. You do have to wade through the crap and the scams to find the good ones, but I find that fewer people are willing to do that so fewer people respond to those ads, which means they are much more likely to respond to me when I apply.

You can list yourself on People Per Hour, which started in the UK and is a popular freelance job site you may not be familiar with.

SimplyHired is a job board where you can search for freelance jobs or filter by “contract” positions. It has a wide variety of types of jobs posted.

Crowdsource focuses on freelance jobs specifically and specializes in content creation roles and media companies.

Writing Jobs Canada lists new positions each week in a tidy list and is easy to use.

Freelance Writing Gigs is a simple site that posts daily.

Contena is focused on writing and editing roles only and is a good aggregator.

Toptal is one I haven’t used but seems to be getting some good buzz and is focused on more experienced freelancers.

Guru has a daily job-matching feature but you have to sign up and join their community.
