11 Simple Steps to Get Rid of Negative Emotions

At one time or another, we’ve all experienced negative emotions like sadness, anger, and frustration. While it’s natural to experience these feelings at times, they can often be disruptive and keep us from reaching our goals.

I’ll outline eleven simple steps that can help you get rid of common negative emotions. Adopting these steps could help improve your mood and allow you to live a happier life.

What is a Negative Emotion?

Negative emotions include sadness, anger, anxiety, and depression. They differ from positive or pleasant emotions such as happiness and joy which we feel in response to pleasant events or circumstances.

We also experience negative emotions when we don’t get what we want, for example, when our desires are thwarted by a partner or a friend. Negative emotions can be extremely powerful and overwhelming.

When we’re going through periods of intense negative emotion, it can be hard to think straight, make good decisions or take care of ourselves. This is why it’s important to understand them and learn how to manage them effectively.

HOW TO OVERCOME NEGATIVE EMOTIONS

Step 1: Stop Your Negative Thoughts

Negative thoughts can be very persistent and often pop into our heads when we’re already stressed out. They’re also a big reason why so many people feel so sad, angry, or frustrated in life.

One way to stop negative thoughts is to write them down on a piece of paper. By taking a few minutes to write down your thoughts, you’re telling your brain that it can stop thinking about whatever it is that’s bothering you.

Next, tear up the piece of paper into tiny pieces and throw them away or burn them. This is symbolic of getting rid of all those negative thoughts that are stuck in your head.

Step 2: Tune Out Negative Media

To many people, the news is like a “soap opera.” When they tune into their favorite morning talk show or hear about an issue on TV at night, it’s just another episode.

It doesn’t have to be this way, though. If you’re feeling sad because of something that you heard or read, you can regain control of your thoughts by turning off the TV and radio.

Listening to music that makes you feel good is another way to redirect your focus away from negative media coverage.

Step 3: Take a Walk

Getting some fresh air is one of the quickest ways to improve your mood and help you get rid of negative emotions.

When you walk outside, you’re doing two things: first, you’re reminding yourself that there’s an entire world waiting for you beyond your living room couch; second, your body is releasing endorphins that help calm you down and improve your mood.

Step 4: Smile for No Reason

When was the last time you forced yourself to smile even though you didn’t want to? Believe it or not, there’s evidence that shows smiling can put you in a good mood.

If you’re feeling sad or angry, put on a smile. If you force yourself to smile for long enough, it will actually trick your brain into thinking that you’re happy.

Your smile might not last more than 10 seconds at first, but the next time you do it, try smiling for 15 seconds and so on. Soon enough, you’ll be smiling for much longer amounts of time.

Step 5: Give Yourself a Pep Talk

Don’t beat yourself up because you may not have the motivation to do what needs to be done. Instead, give yourself a pep talk!

Telling yourself that “today is going to be different” or even saying something as simple as “I’m going to make it through today” can be enough to help motivate yourself and get rid of negative emotions.

Step 6: Watch a Laughing Baby

Laughter is one of the most powerful emotions we can express. It feels great and can help us get rid of negative thoughts and emotions.

We all know that babies are cute, but did you ever think that they could actually improve your mood?

Watching a laughing baby on YouTube is one of the quickest ways to help yourself feel relaxed and carefree. This is because it reminds you of a simpler time in your life when things were a lot less complicated.

Step 7: Do Something Nice for Someone

Instead of focusing on your problems, do something nice for someone else. If you need ideas, try helping an elderly person with their groceries, delivering food to a homeless shelter, or just giving someone you love a hug.

Sometimes the smallest gestures are enough to lighten your mood and make you feel better. The key is doing something that will also help someone else at the same time so you can focus on them rather than yourself.

Step 8: Exercise

When we exercise, we release endorphins in our bodies that help us feel good. If you’re feeling sad or angry, it’s a good idea to get outside and do something physical.

Not only will you be getting more physically fit, but you’ll also release those positive endorphins that contribute to a healthy mind and body.

If exercising outside isn’t possible because of the weather, try going to the gym or working out at home instead. In fact, there are so many exercises you can do from home with little to no equipment that it’s worth looking into.

Step 9: Look at Old Photos

It may seem like a strange idea, but there’s nothing like old photos of you and your friends to make you feel young again.

When we get bogged down by life, we tend to forget about the things we did when we were younger. Looking at old photos is a great way to remind yourself of the good times you’ve had in the past and all the memories you hold close.

Step 10: Spend Time Around Animals

If looking at pictures isn’t your thing, spending time around animals is another great way to get rid of negative thoughts and emotions.

Not only does having an animal make you feel loved, but it also reminds you of the unconditional love that children give.

If you don’t have your own pet, go to a shelter and spend time with some of the animals that are there. Not only will they be glad for the company, but you’ll instantly feel better knowing that you’re helping out a furry friend.

Animal shelters are also a great place to look if you’re interested in adopting a pet. In fact, many animal shelters offer their animals for reduced prices or even free so that they can find good homes faster.

Not only will spending time around an animal help put you in a better mood, but it’ll also give you something to take care of and focus on.

Step 11: Spend Time with Positive Friends

Surrounding yourself with positive people will help tremendously. They’ll make you laugh when you don’t feel like it and remind you that life isn’t always bad. In fact, they’ll help you see the many good things that are waiting for you in life.

Final Word

Staying positive isn’t always easy, especially when we face challenges every day. But the steps above can help guide us toward a happier and more fulfilling life.

All of these tips are meant to help you reduce negative feelings and emotions so that you can live a happier life. Whether it’s from work or school, taking the time to decompress with one of these methods is important if you want to be able to deal with life again.
