1000 Followers on Medium — How I’ve Done It

It’s easier than you think…

I did it, I managed to get 1000 followers on Medium. That’s quite a milestone and one I’ve been aiming for for several months.

I’d already like to thank all of you who follow me and support me in what I write. Even if I write for pleasure and for myself, because I learn a lot from writing, if nobody reads, the interest would be limited, to be honest.

Now, for those wondering how I did it… I just wrote. It couldn’t be simpler. Write, if possible, authentic, quality content, put your feelings and your passion into it, and you’ll see, followers will follow automatically.

I never followed anyone’s advice, I didn’t do any marketing, I didn’t do any follow for follow, in short, I just wrote, as anyone can do.

Why not follow for follow?

As for follow for follow, one of my first articles explained why you shouldn’t do it. I’ve already seen a lot of articles circulating where writers simply propose that you post a comment so that they’ll follow you in return, and that other people will also follow you so that you’ll do it in return.

This is USELESS. Unless the only thing you’re interested in is seeing your subscriber count grow, which I find pointless if there isn’t the essential thing, which is that your followers are interested in your content and the articles you read. All the more so as subscribers obtained through follow for follow will unsubscribe to you the day their Medium feed is too polluted with content that doesn’t interest them.

Don’t Force Yourself

One more thing I’d add is that you shouldn’t force yourself to write about “trendy” topics to get subscribers. Less popular subjects may be of interest to a minority, but the main thing is that you enjoy writing, that it remains a hobby, so don’t force yourself.

For example, I regularly publish movie or book reviews, which of course get far fewer views and interest fewer people than my other articles, but nevertheless I keep going.

In fact, I write about so many subjects that my audience can be separated into very distinct groups. And I can see the difference in views when I publish an article aimed at one group or another, but what difference does it make? Well, it’s as if I’ve created several small communities, each with something to contribute in their own way. For example, some people regularly recommend books or films to me. Others recommend software. Others contact me to talk about trading. And so on.

And that’s a basic principle I’ve set myself from the start. Always write about whatever I want, no matter how interesting it is. As long as it interests at least one person, then there’s an interest in publishing the article.

Write Regularly

This is important for several reasons. First, your followers follow you so that you can publish content. If you don’t publish anything, they’ll probably stop following you.

From a technical point of view, it’s also important because for your articles to be recommended by Medium, you have to write regularly. And getting articles recommended is necessary if you want to grow your audience.

Then from a personal point of view, it’s good to turn writing into a habit. Even if it’s not on a daily basis, it can be interesting to tell yourself that you have to write every other day, or 1 hour every weekend, etc… If you make it a habit, writing will become easier.

What difference does 1000 followers make?

At the end, it’s just a number, and objectively speaking it’s not huge. It’s about half the population of my home village. Still, it’s a nice step up on Medium.

Indeed, I’ve noticed that few people go as far as 1,000 followers on Medium. Many reach 100 followers to join the Medium Partner Program and get paid, keep writing for a while, then finally stop when they see they’re only earning a few bucks. This is what happens when you start writing on Medium with the aim of making money. Now, yes, I’m making quite a bit of money on Medium, but it’s a long way from when I started.

Recap

In short, there’s no method to get 1000 followers on Medium. Well, you can do follow for follow to get 1000 followers in a month and then get 3 views per article. But otherwise, there’s no shortcut.

All you have to do is write, and followers will come to you automatically, no matter how much time it takes. For my part, I’ve simply followed a few principles that I set myself from the start:

  • Don’t do follow for follow (or rather, only follow writers whose content really interests me).
  • Write only about what I want, no matter how many people are interested.
  • Write regularly
  • Don’t write for money

Here it is, thanks again for the 1000 followers!
