Summary

The undefined website provides guidelines for submitting 100-word microfiction stories to "Thrifty Words," a section of The Bad Influence (TBI) publication on Medium, emphasizing strict adherence to word count, tagging, and formatting rules, along with content policies and encouragement for writer engagement.

Abstract

The Bad Influence (TBI) publication on Medium hosts a microfiction section named "Thrifty Words," which is dedicated to stories exactly 100 words in length. Submissions must be tagged correctly with #The Bad Influence and #Thrifty Words to be considered for the exclusive section and monthly roundup. Each story must include a 'kicker' stating '100 WORDS' above the title and adhere to the precise word count, with contractions and hyphenated words each counting as one word. Authors are encouraged to include explanations or summaries after their stories, separated by a spacer. TBI publishes one themed story per writer weekly, with a call to action to link to previous TBI articles. The guidelines stress the importance of image credits, grammar checks, and originality, with a six-month commitment requested for published works. In case of inactivity from TBI, authors are free to republish their work elsewhere.

Opinions

  • The editorial staff at TBI values brevity and precision in storytelling, as evidenced by the strict 100-word limit for submissions.
  • TBI encourages a community spirit among writers, suggesting they link to other TBI articles and engage with the publication's content.
  • The guidelines convey a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech, promoting constructive discourse focused on ideas rather than personal attacks.
  • TBI supports new writers by providing a clear process for joining the publication and contributing to the "Thrifty Words" section.
  • The publication prioritizes quality and professionalism, requiring proper grammar, spell check, and original content, while also providing resources like Grammarly to assist authors.
  • There is an underlying tone of rebellion and advocacy for change, as suggested by the publication's name and the possibility that inactivity could be due to legal issues related to inciting change.

Thrifty Words 100 Theme Challenge

Welcome to THRIFTY WORDS.

TBI aims to provide a home for all microfiction consisting of 100 words and no more.

  1. Tag every story #The Bad Influence AND #Thrifty Words for stories as well as other appropriate tags such as #fiction, #satire, #poetry. No #The Bad Influence tag, no play. No #Thrifty Words and your story won’t slide into our EXCLUSIVE section.
  2. Please add the ‘kicker’ (above the title): 100 WORDS
  3. Every story MUST BE exactly 100 words. No exception. Titles and subtitles don’t count. Contractions such as “y’all,” “don’t,” and “can’t” count as one word. Hyphenated words such as “ two-fold” and “merry-go-round” count as one word. You can check the word count by highlighting the story in the editor and the word count will appear in the top left corner. Or copy and paste into Word or Google Docs and use their word count tool. Keep in mind, the editor provided by this platform counts hyphenated words as two or three words. I highly recommend either counting by hand or using the above-mentioned options.
  4. You may include an explanation/summary at the end (must add the spacer).
  5. TBI will publish one 100 word Theme Challenge story per writer per week. You may submit 100 word stories anytime but only the first submission will be in the roundup at the end of the month.
  6. No hate of any kind toward individuals or groups. Attack the idea. INCITE and ANTAGONIZE. But never, ever make it personal.
  7. We encourage a ‘Call to Action’ at the bottom of your post to previous TBI articles. Feel free to link anywhere inside your article. Your success is our success.
  8. Caption and credit every image (even your own). Unsplash makes this very easy as they’re partnered with Medium. There are other open-source image options including, Pixabay. Pexels, and Wikicommons.
  9. Check your work. No plagiarism. Decent grammar and SPELL CHECK. If it’s really bad, then we’re sending it back to you for sheer laziness. Use Grammarly.
  10. To be added as a new writer, send an email to [email protected] and be sure to write ‘ADD ME AS A WRITER’ to your email. Make sure to include your MEDIUM PROFILE or we may never find you! You can also comment at the end of this post to be added.

Once published, we ask you to leave your work in TBI for at least 6 months. We understand the platform and desire to rewrite something. But please wait 6 months, or reach out, before you withdraw your post.

If we’ve stopped posting or responding or updating TBI then it probably means we’ve all been arrested for INCITING CHANGE. Feel free to remove your work and give it to a publication that is still active.

Thank you! We look forward to reading all your bad influences and instigations.
