I have recently passed the one hundred mark here on Medium — well, as soon as my next piece gets published by the publication I submitted it to.
When I first joined the Medium family and began my writing journey there was no way I thought I’d ever create and publish one hundred posts. As I had mentioned in a previous article, my attention span is that of a goldfish at times so still having the love and enthusiasm to write posts on here is amazing.
But I guess that’s what makes this platform so unique. That it keeps you wanting more. Wanting to improve your skills and it’s a great place to learn. Not to mention that the community on Medium is second to none. I am yet to see any ‘trolls' as they are called. Everyone here is super friendly and helpful. It really is a great place to be.
So, you may be thinking, “That’s all well and good but I don’t wanna hear you kissing Mediums ass for the whole article. What have you learned?”
Well, let me tell you.
Over the past one hundred posts, there are a few things that I’ve picked up and learned along the way. First thing is, that you will never truly know which of your pieces is going to receive the best responses from the readers. So don’t worry about it. Just write.
I’m sure you’ve noticed this yourself. You create a piece, spend quality time writing, researching, formatting and editing it to the point where you feel it is just about perfect. Hit the publish button and nothing. Over the next few days, you get a few measly reads and claps — though I do appreciate every single one of them. Then there’s the piece that takes ten minutes to write, very little thought and it becomes your best post! It’s a crazy game this writing malarkey.
The second thing that I’ve learned over this past ton of posts is that the more you write the ‘easier’ it gets. I emphasize ‘easier' as there are always times when writing is a real nightmare. But the more I’ve created the easier I’ve found it to push past these rough patches and keep moving forward. It’s all a learning curve so just keep on writing and moving forward. It’s all experience at the end of the day.
The third and maybe the most important thing I’ve come to realize is that in order to grow here on Medium you must interact with your followers and the other members. I have recently written a piece on this —Want Success on Medium — so I won’t bang on about it too much. What I will say is don’t take the other members for granted. You can learn so much from everybody on here whether it’s through one on one interaction or by reading their work, there is something to be learned from everyone.
This list could go on and on though I’ll cut it short here and leave you to enjoy the experience for yourself. But I will say this. No matter which stage of your Medium journey that you're at, you are never too big to learn something new, so stay humble and keep writing.
Not every piece is going to be brilliant. There will be times when you doubt yourself and question why you even bother but never give up. Keep pushing forward because you never know, the next piece you write could be the one to catapult you to new and exciting heights.
Here’s to the next one hundred articles. Cheers!
I hope you enjoyed this article, thanks for taking the time to read it, much appreciated. Please feel free to comment below and share your thoughts, opinions and experiences with myself and the other readers.
