Grow as a writer with these 100 headlines

I am in a season of honing my writing craft.

While we should be doing this all the time as writers and authors, I’ve found that certain seasons' force is to get better. If we don’t, we can disappear. And none of us want that to happen.

There has been a lot of complaining lately about things changing. More specifically, for writers, it seems like many things are going against us on a lot of platforms.

While it is important to give names to our struggles, it is important also to look for opportunities in these difficulties. So, in this season of change, I’ve decided to do something instead of complaining about how things are going as a writer.

What am I doing?

Well, I wrote a story recently about things to do when our stats are down and things are hard as a writer. It was a follow-up to the increasing amount of complaining I’m seeing around the internet. In the post, I gave some ideas as to how to overcome difficulties as a writer.

One of those ideas was to write better headlines. As I have been looking at ways to improve my craft and continue to grow a following, I thought that I might focus on this one myself. So, in this article, I thought I would share what I am doing to do get better at my headlines.

Write Better Headlines

Your headline is the gateway to your article. If it is good, you might do well. If it is great, you will always get the click. And while this is something we all know, it isn’t always something that we focus on.

In fact, a lot of people write their headlines and move on to the rest of the article. But, this is a mistake. I reminded of something I read from Jeff Goins ages ago:

“The most important part of writing an article is the headline.”

Here’s why I’m focusing more on my headlines than ever before though. Views are down. Like, way down for me. Reads are up, but views are down. That’s not true for everyone though.

This tells me that headlines are more important than ever before because people are becoming very selective of what they will click through and read. If this is the case, I need to up my game in this area.

So, I am going to try a little experiment.

100 Headlines Over My Next 100 Posts

I’ve been doing a little research and found 100 potential headline templates to try out. I’m going to list them all here too. Because I want to see what might work and what might not. Plus, this post marks my 900th on this platform. So, on my journey of 1,000, I figured I would try something new.

I also thought it might be helpful for you too. It took me a few hours to weed out good headline options from bad ones. And to find enough of them, to really be helpful. If you are interested, you can download them here.

Wow! That is a lot of headlines! In fact, this is just 100 from 500+ headlines I reviewed through about a dozen different articles. Now, there are some things to remember.

Reuse Successful Headline Templates

You can actually use a lot of these headlines over and over again, so you can probably get way more than 500 headlines out of these templates. For example, you can take [#] Most Popular Ways To [Activity/practice], and write a dozen different numbered posts with a dozen different topics.

Some Headlines Might Not Work For Your Niche

Some of these will work well for you, but some won’t. For example, I write about writing and about faith. Some of these headlines would not work for my faith niche and will probably be avoided. That's completely fine.

I Want To Challenge You

I want to challenge you to use these templates.

Now, I am going to use all 100 over my next 100 posts. I want to encourage you to do the same, well, kind of. How about trying some of these headlines over one of the following tiers of posts:

• Tier 1: 10 posts
• Tier 2: 30 posts
• Tier 3: 50 posts
• Tier 4: 75 posts
• Tier 5: 100 posts

I get that it would be hard to do 100 posts for some people. But, you can do it however long it takes. I know most people can’t publish every day, I wrote about it, so pick a tier and a timeframe, and leave it in the responses below.

Also, if you are up for the challenge, feel free to mention me in your post and refer back to this post for others to try it out too. I would love to see a movement of people working on their headline crafting and seeing great results again!
