10 Ways to Turn a Bad Experience Into a Good One
For grey matter, there is no black and white. If you think in black and white, then you do not use enough brain functions.
— Petek Kabakci
So, you’ve just had a bad experience. All you feel is regret, anger, and sadness. All you see in front of you is darkness.
In moments like these, it seems all bad. And it may as well be.
When something unpleasant or traumatic happens to me, I tend to only judge the situation by what it is — not by what it could be. It leaves me hopeless, stressed, and defeated.
This is why we need to look beyond what lies right in front of us. If we don’t do that, then all we’ll see is pain.
Write Your Experience Down
Writing things down always makes it easier to digest your experience and see it with a clear eye.
When something happens to you, it’s difficult to see it objectively.
If you write it down and read it to yourself, it will be a bit easier to look at it with a fresher perspective — like reading about someone else’s experience.
I’ve found this to be helpful in better assessing the situation.
Shift Your Focus
What happened, happened. You can’t change the past and dwelling on it only wastes time and brain power.
Stop playing scenes and scenarios in your head. It won’t help.
What you want to be thinking about now is how to come out of the situation, how to recover from it, and move forward.
Focus on what you can change, not what you can’t.
Look for the Lesson
Anytime anything bad happens, especially if you feel like your actions or lack of actions have contributed to or caused it, try to think about what you can learn from it.
Anytime you don’t learn from a bad situation, it’s a complete waste. It’s meaningless and there is no silver lining.
Whether that’s the case, is up to you.
Use this opportunity to improve and do better next time you find yourself in a similar predicament or, better yet, prevent it altogether.
Teach Others About Your Experience
This is what I see as wisdom.
If you can take your experience, learn from it, and then help others by telling your story, that’s the most positive outcome you can hope for.
Think about all the people that can avoid having to learn these lessons the hard way. Think about those that can better cope with something knowing you’ve been there and you came out on top.
Always try to share with others and spread knowledge. Be inspiring.
Accept and Forgive
Do you really want to shorten your suffering after having a bad experience? Then let go of the blame — for both yourself and others.
Accept what happened because whether you do or don’t, the past will stay unchanged. But acceptance can help you change your present and your future.
One of the most important things after something difficult is the recovery process.
If you learn to accept and forgive, that process will be much easier.
Take Small Steps
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when something bad happens.
When too many thoughts and things rush through your head, you can miss taking those small steps that might make things better.
You don’t have to deal with it all at once. Instead, take a step back and break down your recovery plan. Taking small, concrete actions toward rebuilding your life can provide a sense of progress and control.
That’s the best way to start seeing improvements.
Look Elsewhere
The contrast in the world helps us learn things, like appreciation. If it wasn’t for war, we wouldn’t know what peace was.
Your life is not a sum of one thing that happened to you, one defining moment. It has ups and downs.
In a moment when we experience the downs, it’s a good time to try to remember the ups.
Try to see what great things you have in contrast to that experience.
Find Similar Stories
This is the time you don’t want to feel alone. Luckily, we live in a time where connecting with stories and people is easier than ever.
When I experience something bad, I often look for stories online that resonate with mine.
It makes me feel understood and not alone in my situation.
Being able to connect to people and stories from around the world in times of hardship is a gift and it can be a helpful resource for coping with things that we can’t always relate to those close to us.
Impact the World Positively
After the murder of Gabby Petito, her parents set up funds and organizations to help other victims of domestic violence and their families find and access resources.
Even though you can’t get back what you lost in a tragedy, you can always create a positive impact that will resonate with others.
Helping others in need is a great way to focus your energy on something productive after trauma. It’s satisfying and rewarding.
Create Something
Channel your sadness and anger and get in touch with your emotions through something creative.
Create art or write a book.
Processing a bad experience in such a way can be therapeutic and freeing. It can help inspire you and others.
Something painful can result in the production of something beautiful.
Final Thoughts
There are many things out of our control and we can’t change bad things that have already happened. But we can change the way we respond and move forward.
No matter the situation and how much we replay it in our heads or cry about it, the past will remain the same.
Always try to think in the present and the future. That’s where you will find comfort and positivity.
