10 Things Highly Successful People Do After Work

I’ve been following successful people for a while, and I’m fascinated, like everyone else, as to what makes them different from mere mortals. You’d be surprised to know it’s nothing extraordinary. It’s a series of small steps that they’ve incorporated into their work, which helps them to thrive.
So, what can we learn from these highly successful people that we might be able to incorporate into our world? Here’s what I’ve come up with.
The Top Ten
- They don’t take work home with them
- They don’t gossip about their colleagues
- They journal. They don’t worry about things that don’t concern them
- They don’t overreact.
- They prioritise learning and personal growth
- They engage in Self-care
- They build healthy relationships with family and friends
- They have healthy out-of-work hobbies, or they play sports
- They get good quality sleep each night
- They adopt a can-do attitude
- They don’t take work home with them
They also know they’re useless to anyone if they’re working both ends of the candle. They appreciate that burnout is real.
When they are at work, they are good at time management and segmenting their day, which helps them prioritise tasks and allocate appropriate amounts of time for each task, helping them stay on track and meet deadlines.
Having a clear plan for your day can reduce feelings of overwhelm and help you manage your workload more effectively.
2. They don’t gossip about their colleagues
Not only does it not serve a purpose, it’s a waste of time. Plus, they know they’re wasting precious time outside work talking about people at work.
It’s a discipline they’ve mastered that underpins their respect for their colleagues and their own time, ensuring a healthier work-life balance and a more positive workplace environment.
3. They Journal
They know the power of journalling regularly. They understand that if they carry the mental baggage, it will overwhelm you somewhere along the line.
Journalling also helps them to understand themselves better, especially their emotions. By becoming more self-aware, they can identify patterns, triggers, and areas for improvement, leading to personal growth and positive change.

4. They Don’t Overreact
It’s easy to let the emotions get the better, but they’ve learned not to react immediately. Instead, they take their time to think through the situation. This buys them time to mitigate risks, think about the next steps and work through the process.
5. They prioritise learning and personal growth
Successful people know learning is essential for personal and professional growth. Smart people know that learning comes in many forms, and they see learning in everything.
It allows them to acquire new skills, knowledge, and perspectives, leading to improved performance and greater opportunities for advancement. Additionally, continuous learning helps them stay current and adapt to changes in their field.
One of the benefits of learning is the ability to look for opportunities to take on new challenges and responsibilities or to improve processes or systems in your workplace.
This sets them apart from the rest, plus they gain visibility with the right stakeholders and take on new responsibilities and opportunities.

6. They engage in Self Care
It’s important to be kind to oneself and to practice self-care. Self-care involves taking the time to prioritise your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
This can include getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, engaging in activities you enjoy, and setting boundaries with others.
It’s also important to practice self-compassion, which means being understanding and kind when you make mistakes or face challenges, rather than being overly critical or judgmental.
Find some ways to be kind to yourself include setting aside time for relaxation and enjoyable activities, taking breaks when needed, and finding healthy ways to cope with stress and difficult challenges.
7. They Build Healthy Relationships
They make time for the important people in their lives and engage in different activities and discussions with them. Their approach fosters deep connections and understanding.
Successful people believe in nurturing relationships, which helps them create a solid and supportive network. They also use their relationship-building skills in the workplace because they understand the power of networking.

8. They have healthy out-of-work hobbies, or they play sports
They understand the importance of balancing their professional and personal lives. Their commitment to such activities enhances their physical well-being and contributes to their mental and emotional health.
By undertaking such pursuits, they rejuvenate themselves and develop skills and interests that enrich their lives beyond the workplace, leading to a more fulfilling and well-rounded existence.

9. They get good quality sleep each night
Successful people appreciate the importance of getting good quality sleep each night, especially the role sleep plays in maintaining overall health and well-being.
They stick to a consistent sleep schedule and create a healthy sleep environment, recognising that restful sleep is essential for cognitive function, emotional balance, and physical health.
This disciplined approach to sleep hygiene reflects their commitment to self-care, ensuring they are refreshed and well-prepared to face the challenges of each new day with energy and clarity.
10. They adopt a can-do attitude
Successful people embody a can-do attitude, a mindset that plays a pivotal role in their achievements. This outlook fosters resilience, enables them to approach challenges optimistically, and drives them to seek solutions rather than dwelling on obstacles.
Their belief in their capabilities fuels persistence and determination, propelling them to relentlessly overcome setbacks and pursue their goals. This proactive and positive attitude enhances their performance and often inspires and motivates those around them, creating a ripple effect of success and possibility.
