10 Simple Acts to Lift Your Mood & Combat Depression

Thriving Through Tough Times: A Depression Survival Toolkit

In the battle against depression, adopting a set of uplifting rituals can make a world of difference.

Dark places are hard. They are heavy and cold and really shitty.

The longer we stay there, the more it hurts.

Here’s a few quick ways to shift your day and lift your spirits:

  1. Take a Brisk Shower: Start your day with a shower no matter what. The water washing over you will give you a vibrancy. There is data to back up the benefits of deliberate cold exposure if you want to try that. Warm or hot is good too. Any kind will freshen your head space, ease your mind, and uplift your mood.

2. Tell Yourself Something Nice: It could be a list of affirmations. It could just be a compliment you received at some point in your life. Maybe it’s something you feel good about. Whatever it is, upgrade your internal dialogue and sing your praises.

3. Put on Clean, Comfortable Clothes: Dress in clothes that make you feel good, including your favorite underwear. Ladies, a touch of makeup can enhance your mood and boost your confidence.

4. Drink Cold Water: Hydrate your body with cold water. Add ice, mint, or lemon for an extra refreshing kick that invigorates your senses.

5. Clean Something: Engage in a small cleaning task, such as organizing a drawer, washing dishes, or scrubbing a sink. Accomplishing even a minor task can bring a sense of achievement.

6. Blast Music: Turn up the volume on upbeat, energetic music. Sing, dance, and get MOVING — it’s a proven mood booster. Heavy metal, reggae, Taylor Swift, or anything that feels fitting.

7. Make Food: Prepare a meal instead of opting for a quick snack. Try to recognize food as fuel and nourishment for your body, instead of eating for flavor. A lot of us eat for comfort, and it never really helps.

8. Create Something: Engage in artistic activities, whether it’s writing, drawing, coloring, or crafting. The act of creation can bring a sense of fulfillment.

9. Go Outside: Connect with nature by taking a walk, sitting in the grass, or enjoying the beauty around you. Putting your feet on the ground is very beneficial as well, as your body will directly contact the minerals and energy from the earth.

10. Connect with Others: Reach out to loved ones, friends, or even strangers. I’ve even just done a ‘hey hope you’re doing good, thinking of you’ text before, and that alone will surprisingly make you feel connected. Have a conversation, listen to someone’s voice, and engage in social interactions to combat isolation.

Small acts of self-love and care can contribute significantly to getting past those low vibe days quickly.

Wherever you’re at, make sure you know that it will pass. You are not alone.
