10 Reasons Why You Should Have A Side Gig
And tips to achieve success at it

We are in a side gig economy. People are no longer relying on one source of income or working on one income generating project to meet their expenses and financial needs.
Life has become very expensive and incomes are not increasing as steadily to match the current inflation levels. This has pushed many of us to get creative and get one or several side hustles.
A side hustle or side gig is an income generating project that you are engaged in aside from your regular or main source of income.
Types of side projects my range from a night shift job, a second job, creative outlets such as drawing, creating YouTube videos, photography, setting up an online retail shop, drop shipping, online projects such as transcribing, writing articles, editing and other kinds of content creation such as influencing on TikTok and Instagram.
Here are several reasons why you should get a side hustle.
To pursue a passion
Some people that earn a regular income from a day or night job may have passion for something else besides this income generating activity.
A nurse may have a passion for photography or a racer may have a passion for gardening or entrepreneurship. They may pursue their passions in their free time and may also come up with ways to make money from these free-time activities.
To explore and nurture talent
A teacher may also be a talented singer or piano player and after her day teaching, they may play in a band or solo to nurture their talents.
If a person has the ability to paint or sketch, they may do so in their free time and make their art available for sale. They may also take commissions or special projects that could bring in extra income.
To make better use of extra time
Every person gets to have some free time on occasion. Rather than idle around, people are choosing to spend this time doing something productive that can help them generate some extra income on the side.
Instead of resigning on being consumers only, they are also making deliberate effort to be producers.
As a way to complement your life and income
People that love to travel may take great pictures of their travels and the sights they see and could post them on photo sites for purchase by others.
YouTubers and other content creators make videos of their regular day to day activities such as shopping, walking their dogs or running personal errands and post them on their profiles to garner views and to make money. This way, they not only manage an aspect of their lives but they also exploit it as an opportunity to make money.
They have a side gig within a side gig.
To practice entrepreneurial skills
Every person can nurture the skill of buying and selling. We all can’t be multi-billionaires managing fortune 500 companies, but an interested person can learn how to add value or mark up to a product to make some profit from it.
Many people are selling products from their homes, garages or boots of their cars. Many have even harnessed the power of the internet and are dropshipping them. They buy them from the manufacturer or wholesalers and send them straight to customers at a higher price thereby making a profit without ever coming into physical contact with these items.
To make extra cash
As incomes do not always increase at the same rate that expenses increase, people are starting side gigs to make the extra cash needed to meet these extra expenses.
Some are also starting side gigs to enable them to save up for the holidays, a vacation, or to purchase large and costly items such as cars or household appliances and other special projects.
To grow a venture in order to transition to full time entrepreneurship
Not everyone is contented to being an employee for life and many people pursue side gigs after their regular jobs to build them enough so that they could pursue them fulltime when they prove sufficient.
After a side gig starts being profitable, the people are switching to managing them fulltime. This allows them to be cushioned financially as they build their young businesses and also allows them to have regular cash from their salaries that they can inject into their growing business.
Because everyone is doing it
To be honest, the concept of monkey see monkey do is prevalent among us humans. Nobody wants to be left behind. If the people around you are pursuing side gigs that seem to be working for them, you might be tempted to jump in yourself to also benefit. Nobody wants to be left behind.
Not all copying is bad. If a person is successful in an activity and it inspires you to try something like it, there is nothing wrong with that.
To complement the work you do
Some people work jobs that can allow them to build on their experiences or opportunities after their core workplaces.
Those that work in manufacturing companies can purchase the goods from their employer at good prices and set up retail shops elsewhere where they can sell these goods directly to customers and make a profit.
Some employees have also found use in the discarded waste of the companies they work for. A carpenter working for a timber company may use the discarded waste wood chips to create furniture on the side that he can sell for personal benefit.
Because opportunities exist / To exploit opportunities
Some people could have large pieces of land where they could passively grow crops or trees such as Christmas trees or pine trees to sell during the holidays.
Some wild berries or fruits could also grow on these lands and the land owners could harvest them and sell them to make an extra income.
If you happen to have a large car or truck, you can use the opportunity to transport products for customers in your free time to make an extra income.
Tips

As running a side gig is an engaging entrepreneurial activity, here are some tips to employ to achieve your objectives.
Practice patience
It takes a while for many income-generating activities to gain momentum. Cultivate the patience required to build your side gig.
Do not give up easily especially when it looks like it’s not working. Always strive to keep learning on how you can improve your venture.
Research thoroughly
Research on the side gig that you would want to pursue and learn about how to pursue it successfully. Learn about the dos and don’ts. Ask questions to those doing it to get real-time information on what the situation is like on the ground.
If you are buying products for resale, do thorough research about where you can get them at the lowest prices to make the biggest profit. Learn. Learn Learn.
Work hard at it
Like any other activity, hard work is required to achieve success. Don’t be lazy about it. The number of products you put out will match the number of income you make from your side gig. Fewer numbers will of course lead to a lower income.
If you are a writer or content creator, be consistent about it. Put out new content on the regular to keep your audiences engaged. Put the effort that is required to make your venture successful.
Avoid duplication
Avoid engaging in a side gig that is already saturated. Don’t dropship in an area where ten people are already dropshipping the products that you intend to dropship.
Also, be unique. If you want to make YouTube videos on song lyrics, make them more creative and engaging than everyone else doing it to create a niche for yourself and to attract viewers. Stand out amongst everyone else.
Learn to balance
As most people run side gigs outside their normal jobs, learning to balance your work schedules and the time invested will prove to be good for both your physical and mental health.
Don’t overdo either to avoid burnout. Listen to your body and heed to what it’s telling you.
Also, learning to balance the finances you pump into a side gig will also help you maintain a balanced lifestyle. Side gigs might require a lot of capital injections that might lead some to neglect their other bills which could end up hurting them in the long run.
Marketing
No one will know you are in the line of business that you are in unless you promote it. Send word out there. Tell everyone you know so that they can tell others. Promote and share your work on social media. Create engaging ads that can be easily be shared around.
The customer is king
Again, just like in any other business, listen to the needs of your customers. This will help your venture to succeed because listening to them will inform you about what their needs are and this will help you meet their needs better.
A satisfied customer is a return customer who may also bring others along with them.
Harness the power of technology
Technology is the way to go in 2021. Why purchase physical products when you could drop ship them?
Why result to only relying on the word of mouth when you can also get sponsored ads on social media?
Why settle for shoddy posters when they are apps at your disposal that can help you create quality ones?
There is no excuse for not using technology in businesses in 2021.
If you can draw, share your images online. Compile them into a book and put them up on Amazon Kindle for sale.
A musician can also post videos of themselves singing or playing instruments on social media or YouTube, to make passive income from sponsored ads.
A poet even here on Medium could also compile their poems into an anthology and put them up for purchase on sites that sell books.
