10 Powerhouse Martin Luther King Jr. Quotes That Will Change Your Life
Timeless wisdom from one of history’s greatest leaders.

Moving forward in life is about healing and coming together in mind, body and spirit. I’m often reminded of one of the great leaders in world history — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. What would he tell us today if he were here to witness the change in society?
While we sadly cannot know the answer to that question, we do have the memories of some of the most brilliant speeches ever delivered. Those speeches are chock full of wisdom that have just as much power and relevance today as they did in the 1950's and 1960's.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights icon and larger-than-life hero that changed the world. Here are 10 powerhouse quotes that will bring chills down your spine — and hopefully inspire you to change the world around you.
1. “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.”
A magnificent definition of one of life’s most important values. To create the world we want, we must take action even without knowing precisely where it will lead.
2. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”
Dr. King had the unique ability to use love as a powerful tool to bring people together. He was quick to point out that it was love that would unite us — love is the common bond of the human race.
3. “Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
Another powerful quote on the importance of love. King understood the importance of being touched by emotions and grace. He was a master of emotional intelligence that recognized anyone was capable of driving powerful change — in other words, there are no barriers to entry. We can all be the change we want to see in the world.
4. “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
This is hands-down one of my all-time favorite quotes and one I remind myself of each day in business and life. Literally playing back the words in my mind gives me the chills, inspiration and motivation to want to be the best man I can be. Life flies by. It goes so fast. While we need to learn from the past, we must always move forward while continuing to learn, grow and get better.

5. “But the end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the beloved community. It is this type of spirit and this type of love that can transform opposers into friends. The type of love that I stress here is not eros, a sort of aesthetic or romantic love; not philia, a sort of reciprocal love between personal friends; but it is agape which is understanding goodwill for all men. It is an overflowing love which seeks nothing in return. It is the love of God working in the lives of men. This is the love that may well be the salvation of our civilization.”
Dr. King was a minister and a man of deep faith. What I want you to hone-in on here is this line, “It is an overflowing love which seeks nothing in return.” When we live our lives this way, we always experience greater joy. Again, he illustrates how importance this mindset and action toward love is. Truly beautiful and inspiring.
6. “We who in engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive.”
This quote epitomizes the time we’re living through right now. We’re clearly living through a powerful moment in history, one that is acknowledging just how much hidden tension really does exist. Positive, cultural changes are coming and they’re being led by those that pursue nonviolent, direct action. This is the way Dr. King lived his life.
7. “Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles; Cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances. Courage breeds creativity; Cowardice represses fear and is mastered by it. Cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when we must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.”
A succinct takeaway here is: do the right thing. Act with honest, courage and integrity and you’ll live a life that you and others are proud of.
8. “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
How will you respond to adversity? Life is not all sunshine and rainbows, and it’s probably evident to you that your character is not measured only when times are good. It’s really about what you will say, think and act upon when things get uncomfortable and challenging. How will those moments define you? Will you sit back or will you be proactive and willing to persevere?
9. “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.”
Character matters so much to living a life on our terms. When you’re able to grow in character throughout your lifelong journey in personal development, you’re strengthening the inner-core of what makes you — you. IQ is important. Remember, as well, how important emotional intelligence and character are to your development as a person.
10. “Life’s most persistent and urgent question, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
I close with this quote because it beautifully represents what Dr. King’s message was all about — altruism and true love for the benefit of others. This quote stands alone and stands the test of time. I hope it influences your perspective and allows you to see your life through a new lens.
We can all learn a lot from Dr. King as we continue to unify, grow and come together as people. May these quotes bring you inspiration, light, love and hope that you can make a difference.
