10 Linkedin Hacks To Get To 4,000 Followers

Tips & Tricks

My Linkedin journey

I started writing on Linkedin on 1st of July 2022. I was unemployed at the time in a new country, Australia, and I found myself like the outsider in the room without a personal brand or network.

I didn’t want 2022 to be the story where I was the victim of my own narrative and so I turned things around and threw self-pity out of the window. It felt liberating!

I published my very first post after overcoming the paralyzing fear of “what will people think of me” and the magic happened: all of a sudden, the engine started and so did my journey towards building my personal brand.

After 4 months I have learned a lot, as I had to become my best supporter all while being my hardest critic and my own personal branding expert. It all starts with yourself.

Lessons learned

I love building in public and sharing what I learn (and where I fail too), and I wanted to give some super concrete and actionable tips so that anyone interested in building a network on Linkedin can just copy paste what is relevant and get the engine going:

  • Title: make it or break it. Your title is like the bait when you are fishing. A bad title won’t get you the fish.
  • Engagement is as important as posting. Every time I post, I make around 20 comments on other creators’ content. It works and over time I have built genuine connections.
  • Links: Linkedin doesn’t like links to other platforms: don’t be polygamous and keep them for comments.
  • Too much posting? If a post is performing well, let it reach its peak. A new post will cannibalize around 30% of your audience.
  • Tagging? Only tag people you know are going to engage- otherwise YOU become spam.
  • Short or long? Short and concise wins in Linkedin. I learned the hard way. Leave the longer articles for Medium and keep your reading snacks for Linkedin. Cut your grass, water it and it will be greener
  • When to post? When you post matters: the most critical times to post are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9am. I personally don’t follow this because my contacts are across 4 continents, so I can always bug someone across a random time zone.
  • Selfies perform better than a Pulitzer prize. Fact.
  • Picture and bio matter: I recently changed mine and the purple was a big like a magnet. People like colour and visual breaks. I have changed my bio at least 5 times and it’s always evolving.
  • No ghosts! Always send DM with a message. No one likes ghosts or creeps — except during Halloween.
Author’s Linkedin profile & bio

The most important thing is to have a purpose when you post and a clear objective: whether it is to educate, entertain, inspire, etc.

You want to evoke an emotion from your reader, because emotions create connections and connections at scale create community.

For those of you hesitant to get started, I invite you to connect with me on Linkedin and I will happily support you. If you are just watching on the sidelines, you are being lapped so you better join the race!
