1- Winderbourne Mansion

Standing tall in the middle of the American forest, this magnificent Victorian-era mansion has been long paralleled by misfortune and tragedy. It was built and owned by a “Civil War Veteran” and a wealthy lawyer, Enoch Totten, back in the late 19th Century and was once regarded as one of the most well-kept mansions in America.

Totten had gotten the mansion painted a bright pink and surrounded by imported plants from around the world which added to its beauty and charm.

However, soon after moving in all three of the Totten family children caught a disease called typhoid and the mansion earned its reputation of being luckless. Therefore, it has remained uninhabited since the 1900s and the surrounding nature has begun reclaiming it and growing all around it.

2- The Manor

Built-in the late 19th Century by architect William Miller, this huge manor truly looks like a real steal for whoever manages to snag it. This is exactly why it may come as a surprise that its last owner William Wyckoff ended up losing the manor even after having bought it and spending millions on it!

In an attempt to make this the grandest mansion in New York, Wyckoff dished out millions to have it reconstructed and renovated. However, as the Great Depression struck the Wyckoff family, they were forced to leave the mansion.

The villa was then bought by a modern electric company but for some reason has never been used and so now the great villa stands abandoned on the tiny island of Cartelon.

3- Constanta Casino

An estimate of around 10 Million euros were dedicated to the rehabilitation, but the work couldn’t reach any stage owning to political situations. Casino’s Source: Wiki

This casino was built in 2010 during the time when Romania was still a kingdom. This majestic building has seen and survived the bombings of World War I and the German takeover in World War II. During the Communist regime, it was transformed into a restaurant but due to its high maintenance cost, it had to be closed down.

Now, it sits abandoned on the edge of the Black Sea and serves as a mere tourist attraction. Verily one of the sad miserable ends to a lively place!

4- The Muromtzevo Castle

In the entire list, this is perhaps the most mysterious out of all the places. A tall, stone, and marble beauty, this castle sits in the middle of Sudogda, Russia, and what makes it so mysterious is that the origin of this castle is entirely unknown save for a few legends and tales here and there.

The most common legend linked to the Muromtzevo Castle’s origins is that it was built to settle a bet between a Russian noble and a French lord when the French lord had boasted about his country’s architecture and had consequently aggravated the Russian noble who had then returned home and had the castle built by an expensive architect.

Later, the Russian Revolution forced him to evacuate the castle and leave it abandoned. So much for winning a bet!

5- City of Ani

You probably didn’t expect to see a whole city on this list but the abandoned city of Ani is a true embodiment of its name. Back in medieval times, this city was the capital of Armenia and lay on a direct trade route connecting Europe and Asia which made it extremely wealthy as well. It was huge and famous for its beauty and architecture.

In the modern times it is located in Turkey’s Kars province . Source: Wiki

However, in 1319 it was struck by an earthquake that damaged the city to such an extent that it could not be recovered even over the next couple of centuries.

By the 19th century, it was completely evacuated and has since remained abandoned. Now, the only thing that remains as a reminder of a once-great city is a singular church.

6- Sammezzano Castle

In Northern Italy stands a truly magnificent and alluring palace hosting about 365 rooms and the notoriously awe-inspiring exterior of Moorish Revival architecture.

During the 1700s, it was owned by a wealthy noble and was even used to host the King of Italy at some point. However, this palace met its demise in the 20th century when it was converted to a hotel but failed to attract visitors and guests and caused falling revenues. The hotel had to be shut down and has remained abandoned ever since.

Definitely it’s end must have been disappointing for many!

7- The Kalyazin Tower

This isolated and submerged bell tower stands just outside a small Russian town and currently looks like it was built atop an island but that wasn’t always the case.

Source: Wiki

It used to be famous as one of the tallest towers on Earth, however in Soviet times, a nearby river was dammed and the tower and its surrounding architecture were flooded and submerged underwater for quite some time.

After years of flooding, a small island formed around the tower, and the landmark now serves as a mere nautical marker.

8- Safeguard Complex

This pyramid-like structure in North Dakota is part of a program of anti-missile defense sites to be built all over America. The sites were to serve essentially as oversized radars that could detect any incoming missiles.

However, due to various international agreements made by America, only one project out of this program was completed. This monument is not being used in modern times and now sits abandoned as a reminder of the Cold War.

Probably people are thankful about “Safeguard Complex” Being Abandoned!

9- The Rujberg Lighthouse

For about 70 years in the 1900s, the Rujberg Lighthouse served as an aid to maritime coastal navigation on the edge of the North Danish coast. Over time, however, coastal and soil erosion made it unsafe to operate the lighthouse anymore, and had to be abandoned.

At this point though, the lighthouse had become some sort of a landmark and locals were reluctant to lose it to the sea. Hence in 2019, in a desperate attempt to save the lighthouse, the entire structure was literally put onto gigantic skates and moved to safety!

Final Words:

These unusual tales of rich nobles making bad decisions in the olden times and the results of said decisions standing strong in stone and marble for years to come and generations to see are at best comical to hear of.

Indeed, reminders of how all humans are inexplicably alike and unique all at the same time! Every one of these abandoned places shows us that it’s a very human trait to build strong monuments over time and then leave them to be abandoned as soon as they stop being of use.
