10 Fundamental Leadership Qualities A True Leader Must Possess
Leadership is the practice of a few fundamental traits and skills
Leaders are not born. They are nurtured. Even a person born with natural prominent leadership qualities needs to polish them or let them perish.
Leaders are made by practicing skills, traits, qualities, and knowledge in various circumstances. You might have studied various great leaders of the past or the present and have noticed a few fundamental qualities that make them leaders.
But only knowledge, skills, or situations are not enough to make a leader. The leader’s proper and on-time use of these skills, talents, know-how and response to certain conditions help them emerge as great leaders.
Let’s Have a Look At Leadership First
Leadership is the exhibition of certain styles, characteristics, qualities, and behavior that one possesses or uses through actions, speech, or thoughts in his day-to-day dealings.
Life provides various opportunities to be a leader in multiple situations. If you are involved in any situation with another person, you are a leader or a follower.
Your qualities will determine that. If you get a chance to assume the leadership role, you must exhibit certain qualities to become successful.
We all have certain leadership qualities in various intensities and depths. Those whose intensity or depth is more than us will certainly lead us if they know how to use their skills.
However, a leader alone cannot address all the situations. He needs the support of a team to carry out certain tasks, but it is the leadership that provides a catalyst and motivates his team to perform best.
A leader is a powerful connective spirit that connects and leads his team to work and accomplish great tasks together. A leader chooses his team, spots the right talent, assigns the best work, trains his team, and mentor them.
A leader supports his team members’ initiatives and gives them opportunities to challenge their capabilities.
If you are a leader or want to acquire and improve your leadership qualities, here are the Ten fundamental leadership qualities a true leader must possess to become successful.
10 Fundamental Leadership Qualities
1. Leadership is the ability to predict unforeseen situations and prepare in advance
Leaders have the unique ability to predict the possible unforeseen future and prepare themselves in advance to address the situations adequately. They are ahead of their team in thinking and innovation of ideas. They have various plans for future conditions and prepare alternatives to handle them.
It doesn’t mean that leadership is unable to meet emergencies. They are flexible enough to rise to a level to handle emergencies efficiently successfully.
Subroto Bagchi narrates a story of a group of children in his book “The Professional” who went on a picnic on a bus. The bus met an accident on the way and hit an animal in a far-off village. The villagers came to attack the bus. Everyone on the bus was frightened and locked the doors and glasses. The villagers could have easily overpowered them by breaking the doors and mirrors, but one boy assumed the leadership role and immediately went down and intelligently controlled the situation.
He apologized to the villagers and explained the nature of the accident in a compelling way that calmed the mob. The boy showed spontaneous leadership qualities.
Thus leaders are spontaneous when they meet accidental situations. But that spontaneity also comes from a well-thought behavior of preparing oneself for unexpected situations mentally.
If you are a leader, predict the future in advance of what can happen in the course of action and the response. How to hold nerves, and how to calm others immediately.
2. Leaders are bold to take action and decisions
Leaders are bold and take risks when it is time. When others are frightened by the situations, leaders face them with courage and eventually overpower them. They take ownership and lead team or people in unknown and challenging circumstances.
They can quickly adapt to situations and changing environments. They are experiencing new things always, and every unique situation adds to their knowledge and upgrades their skills.
If you want to be a competent leader, learn to make bold decisions. Avail of the opportunities thrown to you and utilize them for your personal growth. Because great leaders are the product of their practical experiences, they don’t become thus just by reading books.
3. Leadership is another name for creativity and innovation
Leaders are not dumb-headed people who are advised by others alone. They are creative and innovative themselves. They envision their world and realize it. Of course, they ask for bits of advice from their chosen. But that’s to check how his thoughts and imaginations will work.
When they are stuck in challenging situations, they don’t sit idle. The tough circumstances don’t suspend their abilities of reasons and creativity. They don’t lose nerve but come up with a better plan and the best strategy to face the situations.
They thrive on the challenging tasks that tease their innovative qualities. They have a strong passion for overcoming hurdles and don’t give in but always rise above people’s expectations.
4. They are made up of dedication, determination, and commitment
Contrary to ordinary people, leaders are not flesh and soul only. There are other materials used in their build-up. These materials are dedication, determination, and commitment.
Challenges do not daunt them because they view them as healthy for their personality and growth. They love to be put in hot water because they always emerge successfully.
And they are supported by their great personal qualities. Commitment, determination, and dedication are their tools that help win every battle.
Once, an elderly neighbor, who is 110 years and often narrates centuries-old stories when we sit together, told me that a grandson asked his grandfather, “What are necessary for winning a battle?” The grandson thought that he would say great armies and sophisticated weapons. But to his utter amazement, the grandfather replied, “Commitment and determination.”
If a leader is committed, dedicated to his cause, and determined to win, no one can stop him. So, nurture these three personal qualities and use them as all prevailing armies and conquer every field.
5. They do the required work.
Hard work is a cliche. I’m not too fond of it.
I often tell my students to do the required work, not hard work. My mentor once said to me that.
Because everyone is doing hard work, but leaders are not everyone. They have lofty goals, daunting destinations, and ambitions that run shivers down the spine of ordinary folk.
They have dreams common people dread to dream. And for that to realize, they need to work according to the magnanimity of their goals — required work.
Abraham Lincoln dreamt of becoming the president of America, and he achieved his goal. But it was not that simple to dream, and it will automatically get performed. He lived a tougher life. He put more hard work than the hard work of other people.
There are other examples. Barak Obama is another example. Read his life, and you will understand that how hard he struggled to achieve lofty goals.
Other great examples can be seen in history when leaders dreamt of conquering the whole world. Alexander the Great ruled over half the world, Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror conquered Constantinople at 21, and Cyrus the Great united the old Persian Empire and ruled over it.
You can achieve your goals by using your natural pack of tools — commitment, determination, and dedication.
6. They explore opportunities
They say opportunity knocks at the door once, and once wasted, it is lost. But it is different for leaders. They don’t wait for opportunities to knock on the door. They find it. They explore it and dig it out from what they see, hear, and think.
They make opportunities for themselves and others. The opportunities they find are so vast that others too get the best benefits.
If you are a leader or want to be one, don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Find them and take their benefits.
7. They take ownership
Here ownership doesn’t mean that they own huge properties or make big organizations. These things come in the way by themselves. Ownership for leaders means they take responsibility to pursue a goal from start to end.
They never lose focus of their priorities. They rigorously and vigilantly work to realize their dreams. They have a “DO” attitude and never sit idle till the end of their project.
Ownership for a leader also means helping others. To direct them and uplift them. When others are watching and talking, they are doing and performing their responsibility.
For leaders, ownership also means that they don’t blame others for their failure but humble themselves that they fall short. They strive again with new vigor and achieve their goals with confidence.
8. They make way for others and defy challenges
Leaders are not bosses who sit in a big chair and give anxieties to their employees. They are the leaders. They make ways when there is no way, and others follow it. They stand up to challenges and overcome them with courage.
They set examples and walk the talk. They don’t pretend to be prominent leaders, but their actions and words exhibit it.
They lite a fire of hope when it is cold of despair and disappointment. They are a constant source of inspiration and give strength to their teammates. They are always ready to pull up their sleeves and do it.
9. They are visionary and guide others
Leaders have great visionary powers. They never get disappointed and always see a silver line in the darkest of the clouds. They know the way out and show it to others.
They mentor others and guide them to the path of success. They motivate and inspire others by their hopeful and clear visions.
When you have clear visions, when you believe in doing something, and when you walk the talk, others can’t resist following you. Others will surely follow you if you inspire them. Have a great vision, and the whole world is after you.
Leaders visualize possible futures and set the direction for subordinates.
10. Leaders are unbiased and fair
Great leaders are unbiased and fair to everyone. They support their cause, not the people due to relation. They have only one relationship, and that is achieving the goal.
They praise and promote people with talent and ability even if they are not close or any clash of personalities among them.
They love to see bravery and strength. They inspire by people of great personal qualities and admire them even if they are enemies.
Some bosses are good leaders. They see and understand clearly who is the flatterer and who works honestly. They reward honesty even if honesty doesn’t praise them or offer them a coffee in a tea shop.
True leaders don’t expect or demand someone to do favors to them. They ignore attention seekers and support the spirited workers.
The Bottom Line
Everyone has leadership qualities, but practice differentiates leaders and commoners. Leaders come forward and handle the situations adequately while others look and wait for others.
They are courageous, brave, visionary, committed, and self-disciplined. They set examples by doing the work themselves. They know the way and show the way. They always overcome challenges with their resilience and confidence. They never lose sight of their goal.
They take responsibility, provide opportunities, and allow others to use their abilities to thrive and achieve their goals. Leadership is a powerful connective spirit that keeps the team together, moves it together, and accomplishes the tasks.
Leadership doesn’t take credits. It gives honor to whom it belongs. Leaders are fair and unbiased.
Leaders may be born, but they rust and waste without nurture. So, nurture your leader in you and rise beyond the expectations of others.
