10 Foolproof Methods to Make Your Life Better
- Don’t watch FOX News, MSNBC, or CNN. Stick to your local news, and, at that, channel surf — don’t be loyal to one station that is getting its talking points from the above-mentioned large news corporations.
- Subscribe to a few reputable (I know that is up for debate — but you decide) online newspapers — again, switch it up and try to get a variety of viewpoints so you can analyze their reporting slant and any unspoken agendas.
- Watch public television, listen to public radio, subscribe to podcasts about ALL kinds of topics, and listen to viewpoints that may not be your own. Watch the tough stuff — documentaries and history channels, but watch the heartwarming things too.
- Read. A lot. Read books — all kinds of genres: silly romance novels, history, memoirs, biographies, a little bit of science or politics, children’s books. Read books that challenge your spiritual and political views and books that allow you to escape reality for a while. Shocker: you won’t die or go to hell, but you just might learn something new and interesting or expand your worldview.
- Travel. A lot. Talk to locals in the communities, towns, cities, and countries you visit. Learn about the history of the world. Engage in social customs and ways of worship and dance. Explore. Move around.
- Take a walk every day. Preferably in nature. Sit by the creek and listen to bird songs. Watch a river flow. Hear the wind rustle the leaves or dwell in silence if you can find it. Examine cloud formations. Stare at the stars. Don’t take headphones or listen to music or news or audiobooks. Just listen to nature.
- Get grounded. There are many ways to do this. Yoga, breathing practices, calming meditations, essential oils, hot baths with Epsom salts, swim, walk barefoot on the sand or the grass or the creekbed.
- Find friends that are different from you. A different color, race, gender, sexuality, political stance, education level, and socioeconomic standing. Listen to their stories, read their books, and discuss life without judgment.
- Understand that your perspective is a microscopic view of life (in the context of space and time) so how can you be certain that you are right about everything — or anything?
- Let go of the need to be certain about things. Life is full of mysteries. Enter into one and be amazed.
- Okay — 11 — I lied. This one is a bonus. Live in awe and be willing to change — often.
