It is baffling at times that people don’t automatically know the right way to behave in social settings. While opinions vary depending on culture, location and variations in age, it seems that some of the basics of decency are laced into this list. If you don’t already do these things, you can start immediately and the world will thank you for it.

  1. Never be afraid of someone based on their looks. Learn NOT to be shocked by startling injuries, disabilities and other things that might bring unwanted attention. Nonchalance is a graceful and inspiring way to be, and the concept is based on kindness and empathy.
  2. Break the ice in a group by sharing an embarrassing truth about yourself. Comedians milk this skill and get paid big bucks to do it. Disarming a guarded crowd this way makes everyone relax and even if you reveal something embarrassing people will naturally see you as more attractive and likable.
  3. Close your mouth for a little longer and listen to the people around you until they are finished speaking their thoughts. Make a consistent effort to let people finish speaking. When you screw it up just start again. Take a breath and count to three in your head before you reply to people in conversations. This extra small amount of time really does make a difference and lets your peers feel heard and appreciated.
  4. Learn to improvise when things go wrong. During mishaps at work or social events sometimes it gets awkward if nobody has a solution. Be daring enough to make bold moves. It is better to fail while trying then it is to fail by quitting.
  5. Look at yourself before you form opinions about others. My favorite Bob Marley tune speaks beautifully on this idea.

7. What others think of you is none of your business. This old favorite has been spoken by thousands of people across the generations and it rings true in such a valid way. Assuming what others assume about you is just a waste of your brain power . And anyway, it would be impossible to make everyone happy all the time. Might as well make yourself happy. Don’t lose sleep over gossip and mindless garbage.

8. Stand up when someone is being a jerk and tell them to simmer down. Protect elderly people, children, and animals who are being mistreated. Be this courageous and your heart will feel right as you lay your head to rest at night.

9. When you experience a boost of adrenaline —especially in social circumstances, listen to your mind and body. When you wish you could muster up the courage to spit out the words “I QUIT” so much that you feel your heart beat stronger in the moment before you might say it … that is a major clue that this is a moment that will matter to you — for a long time. Quit if you want to! Try to take your personal adrenaline boosts as directions for a higher path. Other examples of this:

  • Ask that pretty girl for her phone number while your adrenaline is screaming at you to meet her.
  • Tell the boss you want that raise even though you are flustered and it would be easier to stay quiet another day.
  • Listen to your adrenaline boosts. Those are your life’s big moments. Those are your personal character tests.

10. Be flexible and adapt these rules to include your own as you go through your daily routines. Always be willing to reconsider your stance on opinions because times and people change.
