10 Difficult Skills That Pay Off Forever
I recently came across a video that really opened my eyes about skills that are tough to build, but pay dividends for a lifetime if you stick with them. I connected with so much of what the speaker said! As someone who has tried (and sometimes failed) to adopt new habits, I could relate to her message.
Here are 10 difficult skills that she convinced me are truly worth the effort because of how much they’ll continue to benefit me year after year.

1. Working Out Consistently
This one hits home. I’ve started and stopped countless workout routines. Sure, it’s hard to find the motivation. It’s uncomfortable sweating it out every day. It cuts into my free time. Yet I couldn’t ignore all the proof that consistent exercise provides health advantages that compound exponentially over decades.
The speaker noted research on how staying active:
- Releases endorphins that simply make you feel good
- Helps control weight more easily so you avoid obesity-related illness

This one is common sense, but so vital I’m embarrassed I haven’t made it more of a priority. It frankly terrifies me how easily I could land in serious debt or ruin my credit if I don’t get smart about managing money.

Learning personal finance skills is about taking control of my financial future before it controls me. As the speaker recommended, I plan to read highly-rated books like “Rich Dad Poor Dad” and “Financial Freedom.”

I’ll admit — I used to think meditation was silly. Just sitting there thinking about nothing? The busy part of my brain was always itching to check things off my to-do list instead. But the more I learn about the incredible physical and mental transformations meditation creates, the more I want to make it a regular habit.

I rely so heavily on technology to communicate that I’ve let my raw verbal and written skills get rusty. Yet the ability to articulate my thoughts and ideas effectively in any medium continues opening doors for me.

I exhaust myself agonizing over big and small decisions alike. Yet moving forward requires choosing a path! Otherwise, I just spin my wheels anxiously.

As part of my effort to improve decision making skills, I’m taking this advice from the speaker to heart:

- Weigh pros and cons thoughtfully
- Then commit fully to an option
Making perfect choices every time is impossible. But I’m learning to replace the guilt of past missteps with focus on where to go from here.
Equipping myself to analyze situations and boldly act despite uncertainties gives me forward momentum. Progress might start slowly, but the more decisions I confidently make, the faster I’ll reach goals.
10. Listening
It’s embarrassing to admit, but I know I don’t listen well. I usually divide my attention between conversations and distractions like my phone. Yet truly listening to understand (not just reply) can connect and benefit me tremendously.

Sure, sticking to new habits won’t always be easy or comfortable. But investing in my future well-being and success is worth temporary growing pains!
