10 Definitive Reasons Why Cats are Better Than Dogs

If this article doesn't persuade you, nothing will

Cats are evil.

Is what I used to say.

Then, one day in 2020, my fiancé twisted my arm, and we brought home a little Siamese named Walter.

My life was never the same again.

I was so persuaded that we got Walter a sister named Bluebell only one year later.

For the record, I have owned both cats and dogs. And I love both. But after three years of living with cats, my mind is made up.

Give me 2 minutes, and I’ll explain why cats are definitively better than dogs:

1. Cats Are Self-Sufficent

Cats don’t need walking.

Long day at the office? Cats walk themselves.

Going away for the night? Change their litter and leave them some food.

Dogs are cool, but they are dependent. They need you; a lot. Whilst this is good for some people, cats are happy to look after themselves.

In the summer, we leave our bedroom window open, and the cats roam in and out as they please. Dogs are cool, but not that cool.

2. Cats Sleep; a Lot

Walter and Bluebell sleep a lot.

Like, sixteen hours a day, a lot.

Other than the occasional outburst, cats lounge. They look for the sun, find the warmth and rest their heads.

My old dog, Buster, was amazing; I loved every ounce of him, but he was nuts. Sleep for him was an inconvenience. He had one eye open and always thought he was missing out.

Sleep for a cat is like water for a fish.

3. Most Dog Owners Don’t Walk Dogs Enough

Unpopular opinion:

Most people who own dogs don’t walk them enough.

I’ve got nothing against good dog owners who live and breathe dog-walking. You see them up at 5 am to take them out. Then midday, then again in the evening.

But for most people nowadays, dogs are a fashion statement. They don’t get walked enough and spend all day on their own.

If you don't have time for a dog, don’t get one. Get a cat instead.

4. Dogs Look at You, Cats Look Into You

Cats are like aliens.

They don't look at you; they look into you.

They know when you’re lying and when you're upset. They assess your every move and weigh your soul for judgment.

But seriously, dogs look at you with admiration. Cats look at you like an almighty wizard who doesn't care whether you approve or not.

5. Cats are Zen

If cats were religious, they would be Buddhist monks.

There is a reason that the Egyptians worshipped them: they knew how self-aware cats were long ago.

Cats don’t need fussing or high energy; they are content. They have found peace in their little world and want you to find it, too.

Seriously, study a cat. You can learn a lot from their demeanor.

6. You Can’t Get Stressed Around a Cat

It’s Monday night.

I stroll through the door after a 14-hour day. Stress levels are high, and a thousand thoughts bounce around my mind.

Then, on the stairs, I see Walter looking back at me. In an instant, my stress is absorbed, and I feel myself coming back down to earth.

See, you come home to a dog, and it's frantic. Loving, but frantic. Cats take one look at you and, with their eyes, whisper, ‘Chill out, man; life is too short’.

7. Cats are Cleaner

Cats lick themselves a lot.

See, my parents-in-law have two big dogs. They’re amazing, but these dogs know no personal hygiene.

After every long walk, they need washing, cleaning and drying. I have yet to see a muddy cat, ever. Think about it: have you ever seen a cat muddy?

They are like ninjas. Walter and Bluebell were once out in a storm for hours and came home dry. How?!

Another point for Team Cat.

8. Dogs Don’t Like to Be Left

Modern life is busy.

I’ll concede on one point: dogs might just edge it if you are retired or work on a farm. But here's the thing: that's only a tiny percentage of the population.

Most dog owners work full-time and leave their dogs for hours a day unattended. This is wrong. What they should have done is buy a cat.

I once went out for the day and returned six hours later. Walter was in the exact same spot. He didn't even know I’d left.

9. If a Cat Loves You its Because It Chooses to

Let's get it straight: we domesticate dogs.

I know that dogs love you, but they are also highly dependent on you to feed them.

Cats, however, choose to love you.

And that means sometimes they don’t show it. But guess what, when they do, you know it's because they mean it.

And not just because they want a pig's ear or a toy.

10. Cats Blend into Your Lifestyle

I have yet to meet someone who couldn't own a cat.

Whether in the city, town or country, cats blend in. They don’t care about the environment; they make it work for them.

Dogs are the opposite.

You have to mould your lifestyle to meet their needs.

Your holidays, days out and Sunday mornings are dictated by your dog. Cats let the good times flow and blend into the noise. In fact, this suits them better because that way, they stay undetected.

Final Thoughts

It’s not that dogs aren't amazing; they are.

It’s just that cats are better for most people.

If most dog owners were honest, they'd agree that they should have gotten a cat. Because what they would have found is that, like me, cats are the coolest pets around.
